‘Sickening’ day casts pall on dominant Lynx victory
Early morning assassination of state senator and her husband hung over 101-78 victory over Los Angeles at Target Center.
Napheesa Collier could do little wrong Saturday afternoon. Nor could her teammates.
Dominating at both ends of the court, the Lynx left no doubt from the opening tip as they beat the Los Angeles Sparks, 101-78, at Target Center.
Pregame the team honored Seimone Augustus for her 2024 inductions to the Women’s Basketball and Nasmith Basketball halls of fame.
“I think it just puts kind of like a battery in our back, especially having the alum there. You want to make them proud,” Collier said. “They were in the house that they built, brick by brick, and we want to make sure that we’re doing right by them. … Just make sure they’re able to be proud of what they accomplished, and we are trying to continue their legacy.”
Collier finished with 32 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks. Her first quarter stat line read 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. She had a career-best 26 points at the half.
Courtney Williams has been a prime supporter of Collier for league’s MVP award.
“You that one,” Williams said looking at her teammate as they met the media postgame. “Sometimes seeing what she does out there, it’s like, ‘Damn, I’m a part of this. Like I’m really seeing this girl go crazy and I’m a teammate.’ I’m gonna keep campaigning for her. The numbers don’t lie.
“Our team is not as good as we is if she don’t show up the way she shows up every game, every practice, every day. Everybody got to see it. It ain’t rocket science.”
Coming off its first loss, 94-84 in Seattle Wednesday, the Lynx knew they had to be more intense, especially defensively. The Storm shot 56.5%.
“That’s exactly what we did in practice,” said Williams, who finished with 17 points. “We went back to our fundamentals on pressuring the ball.”
The Lynx (10-1) shot 65.7% in the first half and held Los Angeles (4-8) to 23.3% on their way to a 58-26 lead, the most points scored by any WNBA team in a half this season. Minnesota had a season-high 30 assists.
Take out Collier’s first half scoring and the Lynx still would have had a six-point intermission lead. “She was great, but not the best I’ve seen,” said coach Cheryl Reeve.
Collier scored 15 straight points in less than three minutes for a 29-12 lead. Back-to-back Collier baskets followed by a Kayla McBride jumper made it 68-33 midway through the third quarter.
Off the bench, Natisha Hiedeman had 14 points and five assists and Maria Kliundikova scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three blocks.
But the joy was overshadowed by the early-Saturday assassinations of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, along with the shooting of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. A moment of silence was held before the game.
Reeve said pregame she’d heard no talk of potentially postponing the contest, a game she termed “pretty meaningless” in the grand scheme of the tragedy.
“Today’s a tough day all around,” she said. “Basketball is what we do, and we’ll go out there and do what we do, but when our game is over God knows what we’re going to come off the court and learn what’s happening. It’s sickening.”
