In the opening statements for the sex trafficking and abuse trial against Sean âDiddyâ Combs, the court in New York has heard how the rapper âbrutallyâ beat his former girlfriend Cassie.
R&B singer Cassie, real name Casandra Ventura, was the first accuser to bring allegations of sexual abuse against Combs in November 2023, which she claimed she endured for a ten-year period from 2007 to 2017 while the pair were in a relationship.
A settlement was reached between Combs and Ventura the same month she made allegations against him, but she is likely to be mentioned often over the course of the eight-week trial.
In the opening statements of the trial on May 12th, prosecutor Emily A Johnson laid out the case towards the jury, noting that Combs ran a âcriminal enterpriseâ over two decades, with Ventura one of the main victims who suffered as a result.
Johnson explained that Combs âbeat her brutallyâ on one occasion when he heard Ventura was seeing another man, and broke into his home to find her.
The prosecution also alleged that Combs forced Ventura to have sex with a number of male escorts, and then proceeded to blackmail her with video footage of the incidents.
The court also heard how Combs used his business acumen to cover up the sex and drug crimes he committed.
Video evidence acquired and released by American broadcaster CNN in May last year showed the rapper beating Ventura in a hotel hallway in 2016.
The video is set to serve as key evidence in the trial, with the prosecutor telling jurors that âWhen she tried to run away, he always found her,â regarding the abuse Ventura suffered from Combs.
The trial continues with Combsâ lawyers set to give their opening statement on May 12th. Combs has pleaded not guilty and denies any criminal wrongdoing.
