The Department for Work and Pensions has released an update for individuals on legacy benefits who are due to transition to Universal Credit before next April with final migration notices to be sent to claimants on ESA before September. The DWP started issuing 60,000 migration notices to claimants in February, but has now increased the number to 83,000.

The department has also confirmed that the final migration notices will be issued in September. Managed migration involves claimants receiving a migration notice from the DWP informing them that their legacy benefit awards will cease and that they must apply for Universal Credit to continue receiving support.

The deadline for claiming must be at least three months from the date of the migration notice, and it can be extended if there is a valid reason. Then, the DWP sends reminder letters, and support is available for claimants from the migration notice helpline, online guidance, and the Help to Claim service, reports BirminghamLive.

If an individual has not claimed Universal Credit by their deadline, but does so within one month, they are treated as having claimed on time and can still receive transitional protection in their Universal Credit.

A person's entitlement to legacy benefits/tax credits ends when they claim Universal Credit, or on the day before their deadline if they have not claimed Universal Credit. However, Income Support, income-based JSA, income-related ESA and Housing Benefit continue to be paid for two weeks after entitlement ends.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has launched an 'enhanced support journey' for claimants of income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Income Support who require additional assistance to apply for Universal Credit. This support, which includes extra phone contact and potential home visits, is offered 12 weeks after a migration notice has been issued.

Anyone transitioning through managed migration with a lower notional entitlement will qualify for 'transitional protection', ensuring they do not suffer financial loss when switching to Universal Credit.
