When these two get together, you know it’s going to be special. Denzel Washington and Spike Lee’s fifth movie, Highest 2 Lowest, is expected to hit theaters this summer, and they’ve just dropped its first teaser trailer. The film, produced by Apple and A24, is a remake of famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, released in 1963. That film was based on crime writer Ed McBain’s book, The King’s Ransom: An 87th Precinct Book, which tells the story of a wealthy businessman whose son is kidnapped, but the kidnappers end up abducting the wrong person.
In the teaser, Washington’s voiceover begins as titles from his and Lee’s previous movies together flash onscreen. James Brown’s “The Big Payback” plays while the trailer cuts to what is presumably Washington’s character’s Rolls-Royce and scenes of him walking around what looks like a record label. At one point, during one of Lee’s famous rolling dolly shots, Washington is shown listening to music through gold Beats headphones.
“There’s more to life than just making money – it’s integrity, it’s what you stand for, it’s what you actually believe in,” Washington intones in the voiceover. “Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe you’ll be successful? And the hard times will come from the good times. The hard times will come from success. The hard times will come from the money, and the mayhem follows. So, can you handle the mayhem? Can you handle the money? Can you handle the success? Can you handle the failure? Can you handle the lovers? Can you handle the memes? Can you handle everything that there is in-between? That’s the question I have for you. Can you handle it?”
Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, and Ice Spice are also in the film, scheduled to debut in non-competition this summer at Cannes. On August 22, Highest 2 Lowest hits theaters before it streams two weeks later on Apple TV+.
In a recent interview with Variety, Rocky, who plays a rapper named Young Felon, talks about working with Denzel for the first time.
“It was like a f-ckin dream come true. But trust me, it was difficult to not fan the f-ck out every millisecond of the f-ckin’ duration. It was crazy — it’s f-ckin’ Denzel, man. I don’t give a f-ck how successful [I am]: I’m always gonna be a student and a fan of certain people, and I’m always going to give them their flowers. I’m never going to be too big to be able to say that I had to hold my composure from not fanning out.”
