Emmerdale newcomer Bradley Riches became emotional as he spoke about how much it means to him to have joined the long-running show, particularly following a huge loss in his life.

The actor is probably best known for having starred in popular Netflix series Heartstopper, which then led to him participating in last year's Celebrity Big Brother where he finished in sixth place.

But this week, he was welcomed as a new face in the Dales in the new role of Lewis Barton, who showed up in the Dales to find out more about his estranged family.

Moira Dingle was shocked as she received a letter from Lewis wanting to find out more about his family - particularly his mother Emma Barton.

Emma was murdered by Moira back in 2017 but before this, it was revealed that Moira's son Adam Barton's biological father was actually James Barton, not John Barton as he'd been led to believe. This revelation meant that Adam gained three siblings - Ross, Pete and Finn - whose mother was Emma.

Following his on-screen debut, Bradley appeared on ITV's Lorraine where he spoke to stand-in host Christine Lampard about joining the show and what's to come for Lewis in the village.

But during the interview, Christine pointed out the emotional reason that joining Emmerdale was so special to him: "This is particularly special because it was your late grandad Peter's favourite soap," with a picture of Peter appearing on-screen.

Christine continued: "This was the one, he used to talk about it all the time and here you are starring in something that was so special to him." Tears started to fill Bradley's eyes as he said: "I don't want to get emotional!"

Showing comfort, Christine replied: "No, no, I understand. It's such a lovely lovely thing, it means so much to all of you then..." to which the actor responded: "I feel like it was one of those things, he passed away obviously when I was in Big Brother and it was like a whole year of, I feel like I didn't get a full goodbye.

"So when this came up I was like, 'Maybe this is him saying you're doing great.'"

Following his first appearance in Emmerdale as Lewis, Bradley took to social media to celebrate as he saw his name in the final credits.

Captioning the post, he wrote: "FIRST EP AIRED! Directed by the incredible @ashgadhvi. What did we all think of Lewis? What’s next for him? Will him and Ross see eye to eye?

"Wow what an exciting journey! Thank you to Laura, Faye and the team for allowing me to play Lewis. Also thank you to the wonderful cast and crew who have been so welcoming. Special mention to my onscreen half brother @mikeparr226 who is just the best! Dream come true."
