Furcal, 47, turned himself in to authorities at the Broward County Sheriffâs Office around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Heâs facing second-degree felony charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing an object into a vehicle or dwelling, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
Furcal was released from custody after posting bond.
The incident that prompted his arrest occurred on Monday in Sunrise, reported NBC 6, citing court records. No additional details about what led to the criminal charges were released by police. Records show Furcal, a native of the Dominican Republic, lives in Weston, about 15 miles southwest.
Furcal told reporter Tenchy Rodriguez that he threw a rock at a truck after the driver attacked him with a knife. The charges against him are reportedly under investigation after Furcal explained to police what happened.
He was previously arrested for DUI in Georgia, first in 2000 and again in 2004, spending 21 days in jail after the second arrest for violating his probation.
Furcal, a three-time All-Star, played a total of 14 seasons in the majors, first with the Atlanta Braves, where he won the 2000 National League Rookie of the Year Award. He went on to play for the L.A. Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins, before retiring in 2015. He was on the Red Birdsâ 2011 World Series-winning team.
