How to Vote for Jamal Roberts During 'American Idol' Live Finale: 'Working Hard, Trying to Win'
Mississippi girl dad Jamal Roberts is in the "American Idol" season 23 finale -- here's how to vote for him to win the competition.
When 27-year-old physical education teacher and âgirl dadâ Jamal Roberts first auditioned for âAmerican Idol,â judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie loved his soulful Southern sound, but encouraged him to relax and find some âswaggerâ to match his big voice. The Meridian, Mississippi, has since become a fan favorite with his glitzy fitted suits and vocal prowess on everything from Disney tunes to R&B classics.
On May 18, 2025, Roberts goes up against fellow top 3 contestants Breanna Nix and John Foster, vying for viewersâ votes during the three-hour, season 23 live finale. His fans will have to vote quickly to keep him in the competition, though, since the third-place finisher will be announced by host Ryan Seacrest halfway through the show. Voting will open at the start of the finale at 8 p.m. Eastern time, per ABC, and will close during the last commercial break, around 10:50 p.m. Eastern time. The show airs live coast-to-coast, so fans on the West Coast must tune in and vote starting at 5 p.m. Pacific.
As with past episodes, viewers have three ways to vote. You can cast up to 10 votes for Roberts on each platform, totaling up to 30 votes for him.
The first way to vote is through ABCâs website. The second way is via the âAmerican Idolâ app, either via Apple for iPhones or via Google for Androids. Both the site and the app require signing in; you can create a free account that works for both or use an existing MyDisney account.
On the website and app, you do not have to wait for Roberts to perform to vote for him. But if you change your mind as the show goes on, you can change your votes, as long as you click to âsaveâ your changes before voting ends for the night.
The third way to vote is via text. You can text Robertâs unique contestant number â 12 â to 21523. As with the other voting options, you can cast up to another 10 votes for him this way.
Disney âAmerican Idolâ 2025 contestant Jamal RobertsAs a P.E. teacher at Meridianâs Crestwood Elementary whoâs known as âCoach Jamal,â and a dad of three little girls, Roberts knows he has lots of young eyes watching him at all times. In honor of his hometown visit on May 14, Crestwood posted a touching tribute video to him on Facebook, featuring footage of him as a teacher there â motivating kids, dressing up in costumes, and joking around with staff.
When Roberts reunited with some of his Crestwood students this week, some got on stage to share what heâs taught them over the years. In a Facebook video posted by the school from the lunchroom on May 14, Roberts could be heard telling all of the students, âI want you to understand whatâs going on right now. I always told you if you work hard ⌠good things will always come out of it.â
âIâve been working hard, trying to win this competition â yâall think I can win it?â Roberts asked, to which the students and staff responded by screaming their approval. âItâs been a lot of hard work and Iâve been missing yâall like crazy.â
âIâm glad everybody has learned something from me, and I hope you stick to it, whether itâs motivation, sportsmanship â whatever I taught you, I want you to hold onto it. And I want you to keep it in your hearts and never forget, alright?â
âNo matter what happens after this, Iâm still gonna be a coach,â he told them as they cheered.
