Is Denzel Washington Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe After All?

Well, it looks like Denzel Washington is indeed joining the Marvel Universe! Ryan Coogler, the writer and director behind the legendary MCU films “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” officially confirmed that he wrote a role specifically for Washington. Yes, the legendary actor is set to star in the third installment of the film.
Speaking on the “7PM in Brooklyn With Carmelo Anthony” podcast, Coogler revealed that he had been trying to work with Washington since he first joined the franchise.
“I think he’s the greatest living actor. And in terms of what he means to our culture, forget about it,” Coogler said. “I’ve been talking to him about this for a long time, and I was surprised when he mentioned it. But it’s not like it’s not true.”
Coogler was referring to the now-viral moment when Washington accidentally revealed his involvement during an appearance on Australia Today in November.
“I don’t know how many more films I’m gonna make, probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done, I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70 [on Broadway], after that, I am playing Hannibal,” Washington said.
The 70-year-old continued, “After that, I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler’s writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther.’ After that, I’m gonna do the film ‘Othello.’ After that, I’m gonna do ‘King Lear.’ After that, I’m gonna retire.”
As expected, the actor later clarified that he had made a mistake. He revealed she wasn’t supposed to disclose his involvement in the project. This especially since Marvel has not officially announced anything related to the 70-year-old actor.
Admitting his misstep, Washington told the “Variety Awards Circuit” podcast, “That’s right. I called him. I said, ‘I’m sorry, man.’ He’s like, ‘No, man, it’s all good.’ I FaceTimed, and right there next to him was his lady. They were editing. They were hanging out.”

According to Comic Basics, Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Black Panther, continuing the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, who brought the role to life. Boseman tragically passed away from colon cancer in 2020 after being diagnosed in 2016.
The film is said to be currently in development, eagerly waiting for fans to see. While there has been no official release date announced, many believe it won’t be released until after “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is projected to premiere in 2028.
