Internet sleuths are working overtime to uncover the meaning behind a cryptic social media post by former FBI director James Comey. What was first viewed as a death threat against President Donald Trump has now taken on new meaning after historians counted the days since the worst terrorist attack on American soil.
The anti-Trump former Bureau official has since deleted an Instagram post containing a picture of seashells arranged in the shape of the numbers 86 and 47. The image immediately set off alarm bells in the Trump administration â the term â86â is a colloquialism for murder, and Trump is the 47th president.
Shortly thereafter, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that he is working with the Secret Service, which carries primacy over matters of presidential protection, to monitor the situation.
But a late-night post by another user blew up the well-founded theory that Comey was talking about Trump and instead may have been referring to 9/11.
âDid you know⊠Today is 8647 days since September 11, 2001?â Wilson Law wrote, sharing an image of one of the hijacked planes striking the Twin Towers.
âWhat on earth was James Comey implying?â
Comey later deleted the post and claimed he was unaware the message could be viewed as a call for political violence in a follow-up statement.
âI posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didnât realize some folks associate those numbers with violence,â the former FBI director, who was fired by Trump in 2017, wrote. âIt never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.â
The U.S. Secret Service said it was aware of Comeyâs post but did not assess its meaning.
âThe Secret Service vigorously investigates anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees. We are aware of the social media posts by the former FBI director and we take rhetoric like this very seriously. Beyond that, we do not comment on protective intelligence matters,â Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.
Kristi Noem, Tulsi Gabbard, and other members of the administration said it was credulous at best that Comey didnât appreciate the potential for his post to be interpreted as a death threat against Trump.
The former FBI director famously sparred with Trump after being appointed to a brief but rocky tenure. His firing culminated in denouncements by Comey of Trumpâs leadership style and intention to exercise his grip over the Justice Department, which historically has remained independent of political influence.
So while his disgruntlements with Trump are clear, less so is any connection between Comey and 9/11. During the attack, he was completing his tenure as Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in charge of the Richmond Division for the Eastern District of Virginia, and his post-attack career work did not involve prosecuting the masterminds or the attack or the CIAâs search for Osama bin Laden.
