President Donald Trump announced that he will be speaking over the phone with Vladimir Putin on Monday in hopes of achieving a breakthrough to end the “bloodbath” in Ukraine.

“I WILL BE SPEAKING, BY TELEPHONE, TO PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN OF RUSSIA ON MONDAY, AT 10:00 A.M. THE SUBJECTS OF THE CALL WILL BE, STOPPING THE “BLOODBATH” THAT IS KILLING, ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN 5000 RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS A WEEK, AND TRADE,” the president announced in a Truth Social post Saturday.

After speaking with Putin, Trump will then be holding a private discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after which the two world leaders will hold a conference with major NATO partners.

“HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE A PRODUCTIVE DAY, A CEASEFIRE WILL TAKE PLACE, AND THIS VERY VIOLENT WAR, A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, WILL END. GOD BLESS US ALL!!!”

Trump and Putin meet in 2019

The announcement comes after a planned meeting between Zelensky and Putin failed to materialize in Turkey earlier this week. Putin had asked for the meeting last weekend, while Trump urged Zelensky to attend.

The Russian president pulled out of the meeting at the last minute, however, as did senior Kremlin officials.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Thursday that a meeting between Trump and Putin is the only way to achieve progress on ceasefire talks at this point in time. “It’s going to require that level of engagement to have a breakthrough in this matter,” he said.

Striking a somewhat pessimistic tone, Rubio expressed doubt over whether “anything productive will happen from this point forward,” at least not until Trump and Putin “engage in a very frank and direct conversation.”

While speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday, the U.S. president reiterated that negotiations can not progress until he and Putin meet face-to-face.

“Look, nothing’s going to happen until Putin and I get together. OK?” Trump said. “He was going to go, but he thought I was going to go. He wasn’t going if I wasn’t there.”

“I don’t believe anything’s going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together,” he added.

Any future plans for a potential face-to-face meeting remain uncertain as of this report.

“What I can say with certainty is that the president’s… willing to stick with [this] as long as it takes to achieve peace,” Rubio said. “What we cannot do, however, is continue to fly all over the world and engage in meetings that are not going to be productive.”

“The only way we’re going to have a breakthrough here is with President Trump sitting face to face with President Putin and determining once and for all whether there’s a path for peace,” he added.
