Here's what someone who used to work for the royal family revealed about the positions where everyone stands on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Less than a month after she and Prince Harry tied the knot, Meghan Markle joined the royal family to stand on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the very first time during Trooping the Colour.

All eyes were on the former Suits star, who many believe looked a little nervous, understandably so. But someone who worked in the royal household for several years says others thought there was another emotion Meghan displayed as well that day. Here’s more on that and what rules everyone follows while standing on the balcony during the event.

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011. During his time working for the monarch and his wife, Camilla, his duties also included that of valet, house manager, and driver. He looked after Prince William and Prince Harry as well whenever they stayed at Highgrove House.

Speaking on behalf of Prime Casino, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “There are informal but well-understood traditions. For instance, you’re expected to remain standing, looking forward or slightly upwards – no crouching or slouching. We saw the late Queen [Elizabeth II] once tell Prince William off for crouching and talking to his children. Since the world is watching, there’s a clear expectation of composure and presentation.”

When asked about whether there is a set place for each royal to stand, the former royal butler explained: “Generally, yes – though it’s not an exact science. Traditionally, the king and queen are the first to walk out and stand at the center. The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children usually stand nearby, always with the children in front and the parents behind. Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh also usually appear.”

Harrold added that the junior royals will step aside if need be but “not in a dramatic way. There is a natural order to things based on hierarchy. Senior royals are typically given more prominent spots — closer to the centre, for example. Junior royals stand further to the sides or back. There’s no evidence of formal conflict, but everyone knows their place and role.”

Harrold also spoke about Meghan’s first Trooping the Colour in 2018 when she had to stand behind the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton).

In terms of who stands where, Harrold shared: “Patterns have developed. Historically, if you’re facing the balcony, the Prince and Princess of Wales would stand on the right, while others like the Edinburghs might stand on the left. However, it does occasionally vary. Before they go out, there’s likely a quick discussion or loose plan about where everyone should be positioned, just to avoid confusion.”

He continued: “Everyone seems to accept the informal hierarchy. That said, there was some speculation during Harry and Meghan’s balcony appearance that Meghan looked uncertain or possibly frustrated about her position. It looked like she was speaking to Harry for guidance. But even then, it wasn’t overt drama — just a rare moment that people read into. Overall, the royals appear to be cooperative and go along with the plan.”
