Lead actor revealed for 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot

Actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play the lead in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. She will be joined by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will reprise her role as Buffy Summers.
Armstrong will play the new slayer in the untitled Buffyverse project, which has a pilot order at Hulu. ChloĂŠ Zhao of Nomadland and Eternals will direct the pilot, which Nora and Lilla Zuckerman have written.
Armstrongâs character is described in casting materials as an introverted high-school student. Gellar said of her audition: âFrom the moment I saw Ryanâs audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.â
The writers also praised the young actor, stating, âWe are so overjoyed to have found this generationâs slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She absolutely blew us awayâthere is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.â
The actorâs breakout role came when she was only eight years old. At that tender age, she starred opposite Amanda Seyfried in The Art of Racing in the Rain. Following parts in IT: Part Two, The Tomorrow War, The Glorias, and Black Widow, she played the lead in the 2022 Firestarter, the co-lead opposite Nicolas Cage in The Wold Way, and a main role in Wildflower.
The latest development comes after Dolly Parton, a producer on the series, told Business Insider in 2024 of a potential reboot: âTheyâre still working on that. Theyâre thinking about bringing it back and revamping itâ.
Geller has previously expressed that she doesnât believe it needs to be a prequel, stating, âNo, it could be anything. Itâs a universe. And it makes you realise that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.â
Currently, there is no timeline for when a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot on Hulu will reach screens.
