Love Island star ‘lucky to be alive’ as she shares battle with tumour
Sophie Lee has opened up about her health journey ahead of her Love Island appearance
A Love Island star who suffered horror burns that led to a keloid tumour has said she is lucky to be alive.
Sophie Lee, 29, is among the new singles entering ITV's hit dating show on Monday (June 9). The Manchester-based motivational speaker was involved in a brutal accident when she worked as a fire performer at the age of 22.
During a performance at a charity event, an air-conditioning unit blew flames into her face and chest.
"I was blowing the fire and it blew back into my face, and set me on fire from the chest all the way up to just below my eyes," she told OK! Magazine's Screen Time team.
The newfound reality star continued, candidly admitting: "I'm very lucky to be alive."

The severe burns developed into a keloid tumour, forcing Sophie to undergo a series of risky treatments with "no guarantee of survival."
"I had a surgery called intralesional cryotherapy" she revealed. According to Sophie, the surgery involved injecting liquid nitrogen into the tumour to freeze it, after which it "falls off and new skin is formed."
After undergoing the procedure twice, the ITV star endured stages of steroid injections "to bring down any more sides of the scar. Because they didn't want to perform the surgery again."
But it wasn't guaranteed that this recently-introduced treatment for keloids would be a success. "I was told that, being a guinea pig, I basically signed my life over.
"There was no guarantee of successful surgery or survival because of where it [the tumour] was. There's always that risk [with] surgery. Then the steroids stopped working, so I had to have chemo. That was a huge hit to me," she said.

Sophie was eventually treated with a chemotherapy drug named 5FU, which was injected directly into the keloid tumour. Following her treatment journey, the star's love life took a hit.
She confessed that she wasn't always "feeling hot or cute" after the surgeries, leading her to shy away from romance.
However, she's finally ready to leap into the dating pool again. "I feel like now I'm in a place where I'm ready to find my partner and find my person," she said.
Love Island series 12 starts on Monday 9th June at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX
