Luke Shaw issues apology to Man Utd fans and brutally questions team-mates
Luke Shaw admits that Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final is 'extremely damaging' but he believes that Ruben Amorim is the right man to turn things around
Luke Shaw has issued an apology to supporters and questioned whether he and his team-mates are good enough to play for Manchester United. An emotional Shaw gave a brutally honest take on United’s situation after the Europa League final loss to Spurs in Bilbao.
The England defender said: “I think for a club like Manchester United it's not really good enough. I think me, definitely, and I think all of us have to question ourselves. Are we good enough to be here? Because for this club, this season … it's not acceptable. We know that and it's down to us.”
And remarkably, Shaw revealed that United players might not even believe they are good enough to turn things round. He went on: “I think a lot of it has to do with mindset. I think self-belief is a big thing in football. I think a lot of times this season we've gone into games not believing that we can win.”
With United - currently 16th in the Premier League - facing a season without any European football, Shaw is well aware of the consequences of the desperate defeat in Bilbao. But in his despair, he wanted to stress how appreciative he has been of the support of United fans through this disastrous campaign.
He said: “This is extremely damaging. We'll have to stand up and take the criticism. It's been nowhere near good enough for a club like Manchester United.

“But what I would like to say is thank you so much to the fans that have stood by us this season. It's not been easy. We take full responsibility but I'd just like to say sorry to the fans for this season. But also thank you so much for the support because we take notice of it.”

And Shaw joined a long queue of United players giving their own support to under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim. The 29-year-old left-back explained: “I think there are a lot of things that need to be changed. I think that's why Ruben is 100 per cent the right person.

“He knows and he can see day in and day out at the club, not just on the pitch but off the pitch, around the club. The standards, the mindset, like I said, I think he sees everything. I think he knows what he needs to change.”
And Shaw knows the change needs to be dramatic, saying: “As players, it is us that need to take the responsibility for these results. “Like I said, it’s not good enough for a club like this. I think this club should be at the top of the Premier League, fighting for all the big trophies. It is hard to say it but, at the moment, we are nowhere near that.”
