Prince Harry's plan for kids slammed amid 'nail in coffin' family decision

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no longer active members of the royal family or performing duties for the King. However, they reportedly wish to keep open the possibility for their children to support the monarchy, despite their dramatic decision to step down from their royal positions.

Sources close to the Sussexes claim they desire for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to maintain their titles and HRH styles, allowing them the choice to take on roles as working royals in adulthood if they choose. This follows a source's revelation that the Sussexes were concerned about delays in obtaining passports for their children, attributing the hold-up to the inclusion of their Royal titles on the applications.

The couple has reportedly been frustrated by the prolonged wait for British passports for their children, suspecting the delay was linked to their use of the children's Royal titles in the paperwork. However, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has expressed confusion over Harry and Meghan's eagerness to retain titles for their offspring, given their past criticisms of the monarchical system.

Speaking to the Mirror, Bond remarked: "I really don't understand why, having extricated themselves from a life they did not enjoy and in which Harry has publicly spoken of 'feeling trapped', they want to give their children the option of re-joining. It makes no sense.

"Who knows what's going to happen in the future? But it's very hard to see how two children who are clearly now more American than British would want to change their whole way of life and become working members of the royal family."

Archie and Lilibet were given prince and princess titles when their grandfather, King Charles, ascended to the throne in 2022. The formal announcement of their titles was made following Lilibet's christening in March 2023.

Due to a reported delay in their British passports, Harry is said to have considered changing his family surname to Spencer, as a tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana.

Jennie added: "I think Harry has always been more Spencer than Windsor, so if he was ever going to change his name, it would be to Spencer. But this would be a final nail in the coffin of his relationship with his father and his brother.

"It would amount to a public declaration that he no longer saw himself as part of the royal family."

The Sussexes' HRH titles have been a continuous source of controversy since they stepped down from their royal duties five years ago. As part of their Megxit negotiations with the Palace, Meghan and the Duke of Sussex agreed to cease using "Her Royal Highness" and "His Royal Highness" at the end of March 2020.

They still retain the styles, with Harry having had his since birth, but they are essentially held in abeyance. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Meghan had utilised her HRH title on a gift basket she sent to cosmetics entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima last year, with a note inscribed: "With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex".

Kern Lima showcased the gift during a podcast interview featuring Meghan, unveiling a container of Meghan's own brand of jam, part of her As Ever lifestyle venture.

A source referred to the offering as a "personal gift". Representatives for the duchess dismissed claims of them using the titles, yet an insider later clarified that while the Sussexes do not employ HRH in public, they maintain the style and refrain from using it for business dealings.
