Rod Stewart Hits the AMAs Stage for His First Performance in 20 Years

Rod Stewart returned to the stage at the American Music Awards to perform for the first time since 2004 tonight.

The American Music Awards haven’t taken place since 2022. As a result, the awards show’s producers wanted to cultivate a night of top-notch entertainment and unforgettable moments. Eighty-year-old Sir Rod Stewart helped the showrunners reach that goal with a performance for the ages. Fans will not soon forget the AMA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient’s showing during tonight’s (May 26) event.

Tonight was a special night for Stewart for more than one reason. He received the coveted AMA Lifetime Achievement Award. However, it goes deeper than that. This is the first time the “Maggie May” singer has taken the stage at the AMAs in more than 20 years. He last appeared on the awards show in 2004 when he delivered a memorable cover of the Louis Armstrong classic “What a Wonderful World.” Tonight, he took the stage to close the show with a rendition of “Forever Young.”

Stewart showed the world why he took home the prestigious award tonight with his performance. While he may have aged on the outside, the legendary singer’s voice is forever young. More than that, he is still a masterful showman at 80 years old.

Dick Clark Productions executive producers Alexi Mazareas and Barry Adelman spoke about honoring Rod Stewart with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this years’ American Music Awards in a press release. “Sir Rod Stewart is a master showman whose charisma and energy have defied time and embody the very spirit of rock and roll,” they shared earlier this month. “We are looking forward to another epic performance on the AMAs stage as well as celebrating his incredible body of work when he receives the Lifetime Achievement Award,” they added.

Stewart earned his Lifetime Achievement Award with a legendary career that spans multiple generations. He is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 120 million albums sold worldwide. He has released 17 albums that reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Additionally, Stewart has topped the chart four times. He was more successful in the United Kingdom, where 11 albums went to the top of the UK Albums Chart. A further 38 albums reached the top 10 in his home country.

More importantly, his music has been the soundtrack to countless memorable moments and has enriched the lives of an untold number of listeners.
