He had left fans baffled after he decided to swap shirts with Williams at half-time
The 40-year-old once again led out Portugal in his quest to win his third international tournament.
Ronaldo, who was a key player in Portugal's Euro 2016-winning squad, also helped his country win the inaugural Nations League in 2019.
But it was Spain who struck first at the home of Bayern Munich through Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi.
Nuno Mendes equalised for Portugal, before Mikel Oyzarzabal restored Spain's lead on the stroke of half-time.
And as the two sets of teams made their way into the dressing room, cameras caught Ronaldo and Athletic Bilbao winger Williams swapping jerseys.
It was a decision that left supporters scratching their heads, with that usually taking place after the full-time whistle.
While many were left wondering why Ronaldo decided to do so with his team behind at the break.
Taking to social media, one X user said: "Shirt swapping at HT… WTAF? The game is gone!"

Meanwhile another commented: "Utter woke nonsense."
And this fan simply stated: "Embarrassing stuff."
Those questioning Ronaldo needn't have worried as the Manchester United legend volleyed home just after the hour-mark to make it 2-2.
Ronaldo was first to react after a looped Mendes cross found it's way towards the six-yard box, with the veteran forward making no mistake with a first-time finish.
The strike brought up his 138th goal on his 221st Portugal appearance as he reminded fans why he's considered to be the greatest football of all time.
