U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled off what many believed impossible, passing President Donald Trumpâs âbig, beautifulâ omnibus bill in dramatic fashion early Thursday morning.
A 215-214 vote, largely on party lines, sends the signature tax cut legislation to the U.S. Senate where it will almost certainly go through extensive edits before being passed back down to the House for final passage.
Despite the hurdles ahead, Thursdayâs passage is the latest sign that Johnson has proven to be the most adept Republican speaker in years, horse-trading with conservatives and blue-state Republicans over Medicaid cuts and SALT deductions with little room to spare. Still, he called in President Trump at the eleventh hour to promise swift retribution against anyone who tried to tank the bill.
âDonât f**k with Medicaid,â Trump allegedly told the GOP caucus in a Wednesday meeting, Politico reported. The threat was largely directed at fiscal hardliners who told Johnson they planned to oppose the bill unless cuts were upped beyond the hundreds of billions of dollars already on the table.
In the next breath, he then ridiculed moderate Republicans who have whined that SALT deductions werenât expansive enough, despite already being quadrupled from their current $10,000 limit.
Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social Thursday morning shortly after his domestic agenda made it over the first finish line.
âThis is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country! The Bill includes MASSIVE Tax CUTS, No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, Tax Deductions when you purchase an American Made Vehicle, along with strong Border Security measures, Pay Raises for our ICE and Border Patrol Agents, Funding for the Golden Dome, âTRUMP Savings Accountsâ for newborn babies, and much more!â he wrote.
âGreat job by Speaker Mike Johnson, and the House Leadership, and thank you to every Republican who voted YES on this Historic Bill! Now, itâs time for our friends in the United States Senate to get to work, and send this Bill to my desk AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!â
On the House floor, Johnson thanked colleagues for their collegiality and concessions while praising the entire caucus for its united front in the face of Democratic disarray.
âAfter a long week and a long night and countless hours of work over the past year, a lot of prayer and a lot of teamwork, my friends, it quite literally is morning in America,â Mr. Johnson said after 6 a.m. following an all-nighter of a debate on the House floor, the NYT reported. âAfter four long years of President Bidenâs failures, President Trumpâs America First agenda is finally here, and we are advancing that today.â
