Ukraine war latest: Pope âreadyâ to host talks while EU urges Trump to sanction Putin
UK and EU announce new wave of sanctions, with British measures alone affecting 100 entities and individuals
Trump will âdo a runnerâ from peace efforts, ex-defence secretary says
Donald Trump will âdo a runnerâ from brokering peace in Ukraine soon, a former British defence secretary has said.
Former Tory MP Ben Wallace told Times Radio: âIâm not very hopeful, Iâm afraid. Throughout this Donald Trump has consistently let Putin off the hookâ, despite repeatedly threatening tougher sanctions.
âThe reality is Donald Trump has no interest. Itâs one of the deals that he will move on from â most of his career in business has been about âmake a deal and do a runner before it actually unravelsâ. I think thatâs what weâre going to see,â he added.
Laying the blame for the millions of people killed, injured and displaced in the war solely at Mr Putinâs feet, he said: âDonald Trump seems to think spending a lots of time on the telephone to him and being constantly humiliated by him â when he just refuses to do anything that Trump requests â is somehow the way to proceed and letâs move on to a trade deal.â
Mr Wallace, who was defence secretary for the first 18 months of Russiaâs full-scale invasion of Ukraine, added: âNo doubt thereâll be a golf resort somewhere near St Petersburg, I suspect, soon.â

Trump refusing sanctions on Putin over business opportunities â report
US president Donald Trump is refusing to impose sanctions on Russia over concerns of future business and trade opportunities being impacted, a White House official has said.
Imposing sanctions could impede Mr Trump's goal of "maximising economic opportunities for Americans,â a White House official familiar with the call between Mr Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin told the New York Times.
Shortly after his call with Mr Putin, the US president took to Truth Social and said a peace deal would be a "tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITEDâ.
"Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on Trade, in the process of rebuilding its country," he added.

Trumpâs calls with Putin are worth nothing â no matter how much the US president enjoys them
Vladimir Putin was quick on the draw with an announcement that said nothing after his two-hour phone call with Donald Trump, as the Russian president grabbed the narrative before the Oval Office had figured out what the story even was.
The call, the White House hoped, would show how much influence the US president had in the Kremlin. But they were sorely disappointed. Instead it showed that it is, again, Putin who pulls the strings.
"We have agreed with the president of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace accord, defining a number of positions, such as, for example, the principles of settlement, the timing of a possible peace agreement," Putin told reporters near the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Zelensky's top aide warns âstatus quo has not changedâ despite Trump-Putin call
Volodymyr Zelenskyâs chief of staff has warned that, âunfortunately, following the TrumpâPutin phone call, the status quo has not changedâ.
Writing on social media, Mikhailo Podolyak warned that Russia âstill seeks war, destruction, and killing â believing them to be the only means of preserving its current state,â accusing Moscow of being âunwilling and categorically refusingâ to accept a ceasefire.
The chief presidential aide added: âThere is also this obsessive search for the so-called âroot causes of the warâ, even though the only real cause is the simple fact of Russiaâs unprovoked aggression.â
âUkraine continues to offer the only realistic path out of the war â through an immediate and unconditional ceasefire â comprehensive, long-term, and binding,â said Mr Podolyak.
âThe United States remains a global mediator â still assuming that Russia is capable of negotiating and willing to end the war for the sake of business or strategic interests,â he added.

Britain announces fresh sanctions against Russia
The UK has announced 100 new sanctions against Russia, targeting multiple ways in which Moscow supports its war in Ukraine.
The sanctions target âentities supporting Russiaâs military machine, energy exports and information war, as well as financial institutions helping to fund Putinâs invasion of Ukraineâ, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said in a statement.
The UK has said its new raft of sanctions will âprotect Ukrainian lives, and our collective security by disrupting Russiaâs military machineâ.
According to the Foreign Office, the new measures sanction the supply chains of deadly Russian weapons systems, including the Iskander missiles used in the Palm Sunday attack on Sumy which killed 34 people.
They also target 46 financial institutions accused of aiding Russian attempts to evade sanctions, as well as the St Petersburg Currency Exchange, and the Russian Deposit Insurance Agency which insures Russian banks.
âThese new sanctions will further isolate the Russian economy and disrupt Russiaâs revenue streams,â the Foreign Office said.
The UK is also sanctioning 18 more ships in the so-called âshadow fleetâ carrying Russian oil, along with the fleetâs enablers, the Foreign Office said, in a move which follows 110 shadow fleet-related sanctions previously announced by Sir Keir Starmer ahead of his visit to Kyiv earlier this month.
Britain is also levelling sanctions against 14 further members of Russiaâs Social Design Agency across all levels of the organisation, which the Foreign Office accused of carrying out Kremlin-funded information operations âdesigned to undermine sovereignty, democracy, and the rule of law in Ukraine and across the worldâ.

Zelensky accuses Putin of trying to âbuy timeâ to continue Russiaâs war
Vladimir Putin is âtrying to buy timeâ to continue his war in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has warned.
Writing on social media after a phone call with his Finnish counterpart, in which they discussed Donald Trumpâs phone call with Mr Putin, the Ukrainian president said that âdiplomacy aimed at peace must be well-coordinated and focused on tangible outcomesâ.
Mr Zelensky said: âIt is obvious that Russia is trying to buy time in order to continue its war and occupation. We are working with our partners to ensure that pressure forces Russians to change their behavior. Sanctions matter, and I am grateful to everyone making them more biting for those responsible for this war.
âThere is no doubt that the war must end at the negotiating table. The proposals on the table must be clear and realistic. Ukraine is ready for any negotiation format that delivers results,â he said on X, adding that Russia should face âtough consequencesâ for its âunrealistic conditionsâ.
