Shakira stopped by The Tonight Show to revisit her hit single âHips Donât Lieâ with the help of original collaborator Wyclef Jean.
The Colombian took the sand-covered late-night show stage in a red ensemble and spent the first minute of the song proving she still has the same hip-wagging skills that made the song so iconic. Jean then joined her for the performance alongside a group of dancers and a live band.
âHips Donât Lieâ was originally written by Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras for the Fugees reunion, but it was never completed. Epic Records initially suggested that Shakira appear on a remix of the track, but by then the Fugees had split up. Jean produced the track alongside Shakira and Jerry Duplessis, and appeared as the guest vocalist. With Shakiraâs input, the song was modified with a hard-hitting reggaeton beat, and topped off with a jubilant trumpet loop from the 1992 salsa hit, âAmores Como el Nuestro,â as immortalized by the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Jerry Rivera.
The song was the second single off Shakiraâs 2005 platinum-certified album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2. It was later nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Shakira will film several more TV appearances around the anniversary of the single. Sheâll return to The Tonight Show on Thursday, May 8, for a sit-down interview with host Jimmy Fallon. Later this month, sheâs slated to perform her 1996 ballad âAntologĂaâ on the late-night show.
Shakira launched her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour in Brazil in February, and will kick off the North American leg of the tour on May 13 at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. She will also perform in Washington, D.C., on May 26 as the headliner of WorldPride DC.
