Jamal Roberts has been named the Season 23 winner of "American Idol," so here's what you need to know about him.
It was a very competitive season 23 finale of âAmerican Idol,â but in the end, a winner had to be decided out of the top 3 â John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts.

Nix came in third place, leaving fans to decide between Foster and Roberts. It was the biggest vote in âAmerican Idolâ history, with fans casting 26 million votes, which is double that of last year.

So, hereâs everything you need to know about the newest winner.
Roberts is a 27-year-old gym teacher from Meridian, Mississippi.
âThis is where I was born and raised,â Roberts said during his audition. âEverything is not peaches and cream. Thereâs a lot of crime and all that going on. Things are getting worse. People are scared to even open up their mouth because somebodyâs going to point a gun at them because they said the wrong thing. Some days you donât even want to come outside.â
âIt could be a whole lot better than what it is,â he added. âSo, Iâm hoping that I can bring a little light to it.â
He has three daughters: Harmoni (6), Lyrik (4), and newborn Gianna Grace, who was born in April 2025, just days before his Top 8 performance. His two older daughters, Harmoni and Lyrik, were regulars throughout the show, supporting their father every step of the way.

While Roberts has been very open about his daughters and takes every opportunity to express his love for being a girl dad, very little is publicly known about his marital status or dating life.

After being named the winner, Roberts took to social media to express his gratitude.
âIâm still trying to process this⌠God is so good. ????????,â he wrote. âFrom my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called American Idol. This journey has been bigger than me, and Iâm so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.â
âMost of all, I hope my girls see this and know that with faith, hard work, and heart, anything is possible. To my city, my family, and everyone out there grinding for something greater, this is our victory,â he added. âNow, I get to make music with the best in the world and share my story.
