âWhat The Hell Just Happened?â when Tatlerâs style editor met up with the UKâs Eurovision act, girlband Remember Monday, in Mayfair?
As the Farnborough-born BFF-trio takes to the stage in Switzerland this weekend, find out what really did happen when Chandler Tregaskes took them out for pre-Eurovision drinksâ?¦
Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull and Charlotte Steele with Tatler's style editor Chandler Tregaskes at Mistress of Mayfair
In that buzzy crossover between Mayfair and St James where those Bond Street big-spenders and Jermyn Stâs sartorial savants unwind after a busy day, thereâs that certain air of barminess that begins to permeate throughout the capital as we delve deeper into the summer months. It is, after all, home to many of those after-hours hotspots that swing into the early hours, filled to rafters with handsome hunks and gorgeous It-girls with deep pockets and even larger followings. My rendezvous this evening is one of the areaâs best kept secrets for such guests, Mistress of Mayfair. Found beneath the imposing Caviar House on the corner of 161 Picaddily, this basement bar-restaurant-club hybrid oozes with elegance paired with a heady hit of naughtiness, and, tonight, theyâve opened up just for me, proving to be the perfect locale for my interviewees: Remember Monday, the British girl band who will represent the nation at the Eurovision competition in Basel, Switzerland this weekend.
Iâm sat at the bar with a cool Pinot Grigio as I hear a gaggle of giggles descend the gilded steps into the red-velvet oasis of late-night bliss. Itâs the tail end of a hectic 24 hours for the trio who - at this point - have visited every radio station under the sun promoting their single What The Hell Just Happened - a high-camp, country-meets-Queen, three-minute romp which sees the trio regaling the fine art of the great British house party - hitting Capital, Heart, Smooth Country, Radio One, Radio Two and Apple all before ending their evening with me. They definitely deserve a drink.
Charlotte Steele, Holly-Anne Hull and Lauren Byrne of Remember Monday
Consisting of three best friends, Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele, the group have been performing together for over a decade, first joining forces when studying performing arts at college in Farnborough. In fact, those early days are what led to their moniker, as Monday afternoons were their weekly get-togethers for rehearsals. Bryne is in a mint-green knit and brown pinstripe cords, her sun-kissed waves bouncing as she laughs, while Steele is keeping it chic in an ecru minidress, and Hull is nodding to their country sound in a delicate flory midi-skirt and brown coffee-hued halter top. âItâs quite sexy here. Very French, very Moulin Rouge!â exclaims Byrne as we sit down in a booth.
Immediately, they are infectious and clearly a very tight-knit set of BFFs. As one talks, the others nod and hum, jumping over each other like giggling school girls on the back of the bus. âWe had a very eclectic back catalogue of covers [back then]. The first song we sang together was P.Y.T, but the Tori Kelly version,â Hull shares. âHave you heard it?â she asks, âIt was on YouTube, it went so viral!,â shares Hull. Going viral is, of course, the name of the game for music acts in 2025 and the group have found much success from their renditions on TikTok where they boast well over 550,000 followers and a remarkable 12.3 million likes. âWe covered everyone, and we would add harmonies and make it a Remember Monday versionâ. We did everything from Justin Timberlake to Milkshake [by Kelis]â. As Hull speaks, the other girls are nodding and adding âOh yeahs!â as they reminisce on the early days, a sort of living chorus, if you will. âItâs kind of what we still do now. Our Fat Bottom Girls cover did really well,â Hull remembers. Indeed it did, they even got a shout out from Brian May himself. âIt was just a lowkey thing. He said something like âlove these girlsâ, and he posted it on the grid!,â says Byrne. âWe got a grid post! And we know what that means!â adds Steele.

Joe Maher/Getty ImagesNow living between London and Chiswick, the past ten years have been a journey of self discovery. âWeâve definitely evolved. I think itâs so nice that we've been friends for such a long time and we've been singing together for such a long time that it really has taken us over a decade to really settle into what kind of sound and the kind of music that we want to make. Now it feels like we've landed where we want to be,â says Byrne. âI keep thinking back, like imagine if we were doing this 10 years ago? We would just be so unsure of so many things,â adds Steele.
âOne thing that we're so proud of now is that at this stage in our life we know exactly what our sound is, who our audience is, what we wanna be putting out there, how we wanna look, and what we wanna say,â says Hull. âBut our favorite thing in the world is [always] the finished product of something. Honestly, say we post something on TikTok, or a cover that we've been working on for hours, we will sit there and watch that video-â âWe are probably most of the views!â Byrne jumps in. âWe are our own biggest fans, itâs so embarrassing!â. âSometimes if I'm just chilling, I will go back to the very start of our TikTok and watch every single video,â says Steele. âMe too!â the other two both add simultaneously.
Remember Monday are set to perform in front of millions this weekend
In September of 2023, the group all left their jobs to go full-time with the band. Steele was the deputy head teacher of a performing arts school, while Hull and Byrne were both in musicals on the West End. âIt was very daunting. A lot of tears, a lot of changing our minds. The one thing that we didn't wanna do is convince each other to do it. We had to make sure that we all got there alone,â Hull explains. Since then, their social media performances have been noticed by a catalogue of stars, growing their audience with a coterie of A-list names. Itâs a ruckus when I ask what other famous people have shared the love. âPerry [Little Mix] has noticed us!â âJade [Little Mix] acknowledged our Eurovison songâ âShania Twainâ âThe Jonas Brothersâ, they all shout over each other. âTaylor Swift just liked a video!â shares Hull, âShe saw a tiny little snippet of Anti-Hero and she liked it. I was like, I can die. Goodbye everyone. Thank you for having me.â Steele jokes.
In December of last year, they got the call. They had been ushered in to audition earlier (âI think a few other artists were still in the mix at the time,â says Steele), while they were on tour, which only gave the group two days to learn and arrange the song chosen by a panel of industry big-wigs. âFor some wild reason they picked us!â, says Hull. From there, âIt was a lot of pressure but it was really fun. We were literally just shoved in writing rooms with the most incredible songwriters that you can think of for like weeks and weeks. There were some absolute bangers, and there were some absolute clangers that will never see the light of day,â says Byrne. In that time, they wrote around 25 songs, which were then narrowed down to around 15 and played from top to bottom in a listening room on judgement day before finally landing on What The Hell Just Happened. âThere were some really great contenders, but they were so different to the one we went with,â Steele explains. âWe were thrilled. We were running around the studio like loony bins!â laughs Hull.
The group have arrived in Switzerland ahead of the competition
FABRICE COFFRINI/Getty ImagesSteele is undoubtedly the biggest Eurovision fan out of the three. âIâve always hosted and thrown massive parties with scoreboards, you dress up as a different country and bring food from that country - all of that stuff,â she says. âChristmas and Eurovision are on par for me, and Iâm a huge Christmas fan. Itâs always been a huge part of my life, so to be doing this is ridiculous because it just doesnât feel real. And to be doing it with my two best mates,â she adds. âPeople sometimes ask if there was a moment you thought you shouldnât be doing Eurovision, but we literally couldnât deprive Charlotte of that,â says Byrne. âI was mildly - well, mildly is an understatement - obsessed with Alexander Rybeck [2009âs Norwegian winner] when I was younger. Remember when you had an old phone and you could pay to download ringtones? Well, mine was Fairytale for like two yearsâ. Steele remembers. As for Byrne favourite act, it's 2014âs Conchita Wurst (âIncredible. Itâs one of those core memories for me,â) and for Hull, the UKâs ultra-camp 2007âs Scooch, who famously sang to the continent they were âFlying the flag all over the worldâ dressed in airhostess ensembles and pillbox hats (âMy parents both worked in the airline industry!).
This Saturday, Remember Monday will perform What The Hell Just Happened on stage in Basel, dressed in couture creations from the London-based Agro Studios. Three gorgeous Westwood-esque gowns bearing the four national flowers have been concocted for the show. âThey are crazy!â offers up Byrne. Last year, 163 million people across the globe tuned in to watch the show. âIt really is both,â says Byrne on whether sheâs more excited or anxious. âWe all obviously get nervous, but when one of us is really panicking, the others even us out,â says Steele. âI think the moment we stop being nervous before performances, it will lose the magic,â says Hull.
This content can also be viewed on the site it from.
In a music video for the hit released earlier this year, the triple act awake from a heady night in a stately - corseted gowns still on - reliving the antics of the night before. Itâs a familiar memory for many Brits, that post-party piecing together of foggy memories and a hope that nothing too embarrassing occurred. But who is the craziest at the soirée out of these three? âI think we all have had our moments to be honest,â says Hull. âWe take turns,â laughs Byrne. As for what makes a great British house party: âFood. Great friends - your ride or dies. A room to dance and a room to chill. A good Spotify playlist. And a swimming pool⦠And a roofâ the trio confirm, the latter of course a nod to their lyrics. But how much of the lines in the song comes from real-life hijinx? More than youâd think! âMost of them are autobiographical,â says Hull. âWe've never shaved our heads, and we donât really advocate for jumping off a roof into a pool, because thatâs dangerous. We havenât swung from a chandelier but I think that could be on the cards,â Byrne adds, âWe have ended many a night out at a tattoo parlour, and Charlotte really did lose a shoe once in Reading,â she confirms.
Preparations are in order for whether theyâll be celebrating or commiserating on their return: If theyâre in the top five, theyâre all getting matching tattoos. If they lose, theyâll go to Wetherspoons, and if they win, itâs straight to the top of the Shard for drinks. Either way, their summer is lined up with a string of gigs and festivals across the country, including opening for The Corrs and Natalie Imbruglia at Blenheim Palace next month.
As we prepare to leave and I thank the Mistress team for providing us with our glittering venue, their infectious chuckles are heard once more. This time they're in the loo, recording yet another TikTok. Remember Monday? Theyâre certainly hard to forget!
Best of luck to the UKâs Eurovision act this Saturday. Tatler is behind you all the way.
