Anita Dobson teases explosive Doctor Who twist as iconic villain returns

Secrets are on the bring of exposure in the two-part Doctor Who finale and Anita Dobson has confirmed suspicions that her character, Mrs Flood, isn't as innocent as she seems.

Doctor Who enthusiasts had their suspicions about Mrs Flood from the start, and they were spot on! The show's double-bill finale is set to reveal a massive secret about her character.

Anita Dobson has become quite the master of secrecy. Fresh from her surprise return in EastEnders for the soap's 40th anniversary, the 76 year old star had to keep tight-lipped about her role in Doctor Who.

"It was hard," she admits. "You start to say a sentence and think, 'No, I can't go down that road.' It was so exciting, though." In the latest series, Anita portrays the seemingly gentle Mrs Flood, but beneath her kind façade lurks the Rani, a formidable and unscrupulous Time Lady.

"She's a classic enemy of the Doctor," reveals Russell T Davies, the series creator. "Whenever you introduce any woman into any role on Doctor Who, half the internet conjects that she's the Rani. Sometimes, you just have to go with it."

For die-hard Whovians, the Rani's comeback is a significant event. First seen in 1985 and originally portrayed by the late Kate O'Mara, the character stood out as a sharp-minded and stylish neurochemist who valued science above morality.

"She's more interesting than simply being all evil because she was a scientist that was always more amoral than immoral," Russell elaborates.

Kate, who sadly passed away from ovarian cancer in 2014, has managed to leave a lasting legacy within the Doctor Who community, touching hearts including that of Russell T. Davies. "She was a wonderful woman, I wish I'd known her. We dedicated the readthrough to her," he reminisces.

Anita Dobson is set to make waves as she reprises the iconic role of the Rani, a character that has left an indelible mark on Doctor Who fans since her first appearance over forty years ago.

And she won't be doing it alone; Anita will be accompanied by 'Bend It Like Beckham' star Archie Panjabi, in what's shaping up to be a scene for the ages with both actors portraying the Rani in a mesmerising cross-generational sequence.

"It was so much fun. I saw the one with Ncuti [Gatwa] and David [Tennant], when Ncuti took over as the Doctor," Anita gleefully shares.

"When I got told it was going to happen to me and Archie, I was blown away. It was more difficult than you'd think, but it was great fun."

However, adjusting to this new dynamic wasn't without its challenges. "When Archie came on board, I didn't understand it all," admits Anita.

"Until I learned we'd be doing the split. Then I got it. We are one, except she plays the bossy one, I sit and make notes. It was an exciting alliance."

The connection between Anita and Archie was apparent from the get-go. "Archie was a dream to work with," Anita fondly recalls.

"We clicked on the first day. That's what you hope for. " Russell adds a sweet note, "We don't have any behind-the-scenes footage of them separately, because they never left each other's sides."

Anita was kept in the dark about her character being the Rani until the eleventh hour. She shared, "Throughout the series, my make-up artist and I used to discuss it," adding, "But I wasn't sure. Once I found out, I had to be even more careful not to give anything away."

The season's two-part finale, featuring 'Wish World' and 'The Reality War', sees both versions of the Rani wreak havoc in a universe that's evolved during their absence.

With Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor under the impression he's the last of the Time Lords, the Rani's influence escalates dramatically. "She's on her greatest experiment yet," Russell says.

"She's rarely worked at this level before. What you get now is the two Ranis working together. It's a fantastically servile relationship where she sort of becomes the Igor to the Rani's Frankenstein. The Doctor is up against two enemies instead of one."

The upcoming episode is set to deliver unexpected turns and a formidable alliance of adversaries, including Jonah Hauer-King's Conrad, who was previously seen behind bars. "He's now part of this big coalition against the Doctor," Russell hints.

The episode also marks the return of familiar faces such as Millie Gibson, Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley, and Alexander Devrient.

For Anita, participating in the show has been an absolute thrill. Recounting her experience, she said, "When I went in to do some audio dubbing, I watched the episode," and confessed, "I gasped out loud. They even filmed my reaction. I'm proud to be a part of it."

As secrets come to light, alliances are formed, and malevolence rises, Doctor Who gears up for a finale brimming with suspenseful excitement.

The Doctor steps into an unprecedented battle – but what will happen to Ruby? What is the Rani's ultimate plan? And who will survive the havoc she wreaks?
