The riots in Los Angeles continue to spiral out of control on Sunday night, marking the third consecutive day of rioting in the city. In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump referred to the rioters as “insurrectionists” for the first time.
As of 7:30 local time, overhead aerial footage obtained by ABC 7 Los Angeles shows rioters pelting rocks, bikes, fireworks and other projectiles at police cars from an overpass not far from the federal complex. Officers, located on the northbound side of the U.S. Route 101 Freeway, could be seen ducking for ducking for cover under the overpass as vehicles sustained heavy damage.
Officers on the northbound side were eventually forced to retreat, while rioters were seen throwing projectiles at passing vehicles on the southbound side. “You see the size of those rocks, that could easily kill somebody,” an ABC 7 anchor remarked.
Anchors further expressed shock that the riot had been allowed to go on as long as it did, adding that officers were currently “running for their lives.”
A few blocks away, police moved in to clear makeshift barricades that had been set up by rioters outside City Hall. LAPD officers deployed tear gas and other less-than-lethal crowd control munitions as mounted unites advanced close behind them.
Los Angeles County leaders and law enforcement officials are expected to be holding a press conference at 8 p.m. local time.
President Donald Trump is now referring to the riots as an “insurrection” for the first time. “Governor Gavin Newscum and ‘Mayor’ Bass should apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they have done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots,” Trump posted on social media Sunday night.
“These are not protesters, they are troublemakers and insurrectionists. Remember, NO MASKS!”
In addition to the attacks on Los Angeles County law enforcement, rioters have set several vehicles on fire and have attempted to occupy federal buildings. One masked rioter could be seen holding a mock severed head of President Donald Trump.
At least one Molotov cocktail was thrown onto one of the abandoned police vehicles on the 101 Freeway after officers were forced to retreat.
President Trump took control of the state’s national guard and deployed 2,000 troops after far-left mobs attacked federal agents over the preceding two days. The National Guard units called into federal service will remain for at least 60 days, “or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense,” the president wrote.
“In addition, the Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion,” Trump wrote in a press release.
U.S. Northern Command announced in a separate release Sunday that “approximately 2,000 California Army National Guard soldiers have been placed under federal command and control in a Title 10 status to support the protection of federal personnel and federal property in the greater Los Angeles area.”
“At this time, there are approximately 300 members of the California Army National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed at the following locations in the greater Los Angeles area: Los Angeles, Paramount, and Compton, California,” the release continued.
As of 7 p.m. West Coast time, masked demonstrators began to gather outside an ICE facility in San Francisco after local Antifa-linked militants called for a “day of action.”
This is a developing story.
