Cassie Ventura returned to the stand on Wednesday, May 14, to continue testifying in the governmentâs sex trafficking and racketeering case against her former boyfriend, Sean âDiddyâ Combs.Â
The R&B singer, 38, shared more details about her relationship with the hip-hop mogul, whom she dated on-and-off from 2007 to 2018. Ventura said that Combs would sometimes get violent with her, at one point lunging at her with a wine opener when he learned she was dating Kid Cudi (via CNN). He also told her that the rapperâs car would be blown up, which it later was.Â
At one point during her testimony, Ventura â who is eight months pregnant â broke down in tears, saying that she had considered suicide because of the trauma from her relationship with Diddy. The jury was also shown explicit images of Ventura from the videos of âfreak-offsâ Combs orchestrated.

Venturaâs pregnancy could work in the prosecutionâs favor as they work to put Diddy behind bars, a legal expert told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. Diddyâs defense team had asked that Judge Arun Subramanian that Ventura be seated before the jury entered the courtroom, arguing that jurors might be swayed by her prominent baby bump. Subramanian apparently rejected that request, with Ventura walking into the courtroom after the jury was seated.Â
âThe courtâs decision to have her enter the courtroom visibly pregnant, rather than having her seated beforehand, is an interesting one and could be interpreted as a deliberate choice,â California family lawyer Alphonse Provinziano said in an email. âThis presentation subtly elicits sympathy from any reasonable person, given the added vulnerability of her pregnancy while reliving a traumatic experience.â
Venturaâs account of her time with Combs âwill be highly charged and emotional for the jury,â Provinziano, a fellow with the International Academy of Family Lawyers and a founder of Provinziano & Associates, added. âMs. Venturaâs testimony highlights examples of the cycle of violence brought forth by Mr. Combs, where a victim rationalizes the abuse that is occurring to them because they are in love with the alleged abuser.â
Ventura is expected to return to the stand on Thursday to continue her testimony. Her powerful accounts of the fear she felt during her time with Diddy highlight the nature of coercive control, Provinziano said. Coercive control is a kind of abuse where the abuser takes step to control another personâs life, including their sex life, daily activities, and finances. (Venturaâs relationship with Diddy began after she signed a 10-album deal with Bad Boy Records, and she testified that he dictated what happened with her career.)
âIn this case, Ms. Ventura testifies she felt like she was a prisoner, and while she may have appeared to engage in some seemingly consensual behavior, the testimony, if true, reveals the concept of coercive control, wherein a victim is coerced into abuse due to threats of financial control,â Provinziano said. âIf true, in this case, the power of someone like Mr. Combs would have had an immense sway over the alleged victim and only enhanced his ability to abuse Ms. Ventura and force her to do degrading and humiliating acts.â
Venturaâs explosive testimony is at the center of the case against Combs, who is accused of running a criminal enterprise involving sex trafficking, forced labor, and bribery, and other offenses. Prosecutors claim the Bad Boy Records founder used his power in the music industry to further his illegal activities, including coercing people to participate in wild sex parties, which he would often record without the participantsâ consent. He has pleaded not guilty, with his lawyers saying that everyone involved in the freak-offs was a willing participant.Â
