Eurovision viewers brand major change made to semi-final results 'a mess'

Eurovision viewers have branded a major change made to how the results were delivered âa messâ, after a new system was introduced.
With this yearâs Eurovision being held in the scenic Swiss city of Basel, the first of two semi-finals took place on Tuesday (May 13).

On a night where Celine Dion made a surprise appearance via video, 15 countries tried to win votes to get through to the final on Saturday (May 17). Hosts Switzerland, and âbig fiveâ members Italy and Spain also teased their performances.

Norway, Albania, Sweden, Iceland, the Netherlands, Poland, San Marino, Estonia, Portugal, and Ukraine were all announced to be joining them in the final.
Sadly for Slovenia, Belgium, Azerbaijan, Croatia and Cyprus, they didnât receive enough votes and were sent home after months of preparation.
Traditionally, the semi-final results would be read out in no particular order, as the camera panned around between contestants waiting in the green room.
Article continues belowHowever, those watching the first semi-final saw this year's presenters Hazel Brugger and Sandra Studer revealing the results in a new way.
In a Eurovision first, a split screen was used for the first nine reveals, focusing on three countries at a time, with one of the group being sent through.

Decided by a random algorithm, those whose names were not read out could still reappear in the segment and go on to be sent through later.
Once nine of the countries were sent through, the final result was presented without the split screen in favour of the traditional approach.
Those watching at home were not impressed with the change, taking to X, previously known as Twitter, to share their frustrations over the results' revamp.
