Gerard Butler has slayed monsters, survived disasters, and shouted “This is Sparta!” with a full chest; but this might be his most touching moment yet. The “How to Train Your Dragon” star just revealed that the upcoming live-action film is dedicated to his late mother, Margaret Coll, who passed away earlier this year. And we’re not okay. Because this tribute? It hits straight in the feels.
In an interview with Magic Radio in the UK, Butler shared how director Dean DeBlois and the Universal team surprised him by including a dedication to his mom in the movie’s credits and yep, we’re already tearing up.
While chatting about the movie, Butler explained he was excited for Margaret to see it, but had a feeling she might not make it. “If Stoick had a mum, that would have been my mum,” he said, calling her “strong, fiery, graceful and beautiful,” according to People. You can practically hear the pride in his voice; and the ache too.
Butler’s character, Stoick, is all about bravery, legacy, and family… which makes this dedication even more meaningful. And the fact that the filmmakers quietly added the tribute without telling him first? Cue the waterworks. “It was just so beautiful,” he continued. “I couldn’t believe they did it, and it just shows the heart of Dean and that production.”
Sometimes it’s the small gestures that say everything; and in this case, a few words in the credits feel like a full-circle hug.
Butler shared how his mom believed in his acting dream from the very beginning. “She knew since I was a kid I wanted to be an actor,” he said, per Pearl and Dean. Every actor needs someone in their corner like that. The dedication isn’t just about honoring a life lost, it’s about spotlighting the person who helped him find his path in the first place.
DeBlois told The Hollywood Reporter that he “proposed it to the studio to see how they felt about it before telling [Gerard],” adding that he “knew that the loss of his mother was a deeply felt wound and that he was having a tough time recovering from it.” As for the decision itself? DeBlois said, “to honor her with a dedication in the credits just seemed like the right thing to do.” That simple act of compassion? It matters.
And this isn’t just a story about a movie dedication… it’s about the real people behind the epic storytelling. And while Margaret Coll might not be here to see her son soar on the big screen, her spirit is clearly still guiding him. And we think she’d be proud.
