Harry Maguire clashes with Cristian Romero as Man United wait for trophy lift
Manchester United lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final to ensure that they will not be playing European football next season
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero clashed in an unseen moment while the two teams waited to collect their medals after the Europa League final.
Throughout the contest, which Spurs won thanks to Brennan Johnson's goal, Maguire and Romero clashed on the pitch. After the Argentine defender went to ground after an innocuous challenge by Rasmus Hojlund, the Englishman could be seen shouting: "You're the captain, come on."
‌
Romero wore the armband for Tottenham in the absence of Heung-min Son who came off the bench in the second half. Maguire would square up with the Spurs defender on numerous occasions as the Reds pushed for an equaliser which never came.
‌
After the final whistle, it appeared as though Romero was looking to bury the hatchet as he came up behind Maguire to shake hands. However, the United man chose to reject his handshake and Romero chose to move on.
That was not the end of it though as Romero embraced Diogo Dalot, Maguire went over to him and pushed him away from the full-back, remonstrating with the Argentine. It appeared as though Maguire was telling Romero to join the celebrations with his teammates and eventually the duo were separated by the backroom staff.
Maguire seemed to have a problem specifically with Romero rather than the Tottenham players in general after the defeat. As Spurs gave United a guard of honour, the centre-back stopped to hug James Maddison who he plays alongside with England and previously Leicester City.
