Violence continues to escalate in Los Angeles on Sunday night as thousands of anti-ICE rioters have taken to the streets for the third straight day.
The Los Angeles Police Department has declared an unlawful assembly as of 6 p.m. local time after rioters began to smash vehicles and start fires. The most recent footage obtained by on-the-ground reporter Cam Higby shows multiple self-driving Waymo vehicles that were set on fire by rioters waving Mexican flags.
“The Waymo autonomous driving vehicle continues to burn, the federal building is over run,” Higby reported. “No police or national guard to be seen.”
As of 6.05 p.m. local time, police had not yet moved in on the affected area Higby was reporting from. The vehicles had practically disintegrated after burning for more than an hour.
Additional rioters filmed by Higby — many of whom were also flying Mexican flags — could be seen carrying around a mock severed head of President Donald Trump. “The streets in LA officially belong to the rioters,” Higby reported.
As of 6:12 p.m. local time, the police presence in the affected area around the U.S. Route 101 Freeway increased dramatically. “The cavalry has arrived. The jail bus just pulled in and a stronger local police force has rolled up,” Higby reported.
Police initially cleared protesters who blocked traffic in the northbound lane, though disturbances remain in the southbound direction as of this report, according to on-the-ground journalist Brendan Gutenschwager. Around 6:20 p.m. local time, police deployed tear gas, smoke and other less-than-lethal crowd control measures in order to clear the freeway.
At 6:48 p.m., Higby reported that rioters were shooting fireworks at passing vehicles. “I predict there will be casualties to these riots,” he said.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass — who has drawn intense criticism for vowing to “fight” the Trump Administration and holding back LAPD resources from besieged federal agents — said in a press conference that she condemns violence after the situation spiraled out of control. The mayor also attempted to blame President Trump for the unrest.
“We’re working with officials, we’re organizing resources, but what we’re seeing in Los Angeles is chaos that is provoked by the administration. When you raid Home Depot and workplaces, when you tear parents and children apart, and when you run armored caravans through our streets, you cause fear and you cause panic,” the mayor said.
“I want the people of Los Angeles to know that we stand with all Angelinos. No matter where you were born, the First Amendment right gives you the ability again to protest peacefully, but it does not give you the right to be violent, to create chaos or to vandalize property. And that will not be tolerated,” Bass went on to say. “So I call on all Angelenos to continue expressing your right, your anger, your outrage, but to do it peacefully,” she added.
President Trump took control of the state’s national guard and deployed 2,000 troops after far-left mobs attacked federal agents over the preceding two days. The National Guard units called into federal service will remain for at least 60 days, “or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense,” the president wrote.
“In addition, the Secretary of Defense may employ any other members of the regular Armed Forces as necessary to augment and support the protection of Federal functions and property in any number determined appropriate in his discretion,” Trump wrote in a press release.
U.S. Northern Command announced in a separate release Sunday that “approximately 2,000 California Army National Guard soldiers have been placed under federal command and control in a Title 10 status to support the protection of federal personnel and federal property in the greater Los Angeles area.”
“At this time, there are approximately 300 members of the California Army National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployed at the following locations in the greater Los Angeles area: Los Angeles, Paramount, and Compton, California,” the release continued.
“Additionally, approximately 500 Marines from 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California, are in a prepared to deploy status should they be necessary to augment and support the DoD’s protection of federal property and personnel efforts.”
