These days, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) is a seasoned pro at making balcony appearances with the royal family. But once upon a time, she needed a little guidance from Prince William on her positioning and exactly where to stand for her very first Trooping the Colour.
Kate stepped out on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony for the first time in April 2011, the day she and William were married at Westminster Abbey. A few months later, the princess joined the royal family as they stood on the balcony during the Trooping the Colour to watch a flypast.
Now, a professional lip reader has decoded what William said to his wife as she made her first Trooping the Colour appearance.
Nicola Hickling is a lip-reading expert and the founder of LipReader, a company specializing in lipreading and expert witness reports. Hickling has spearheaded the development of innovative technologies and services that empower individuals with hearing impairments. She has also appeared in the likes of the Daily Mail, Page Six, Newsweek, and more.
Speaking on behalf of Genting Casino, Hicking shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet that as the couple walked out onto the balcony, William put his hand on Kateâs lower back, guiding her slightly to the left before telling her: âLetâs stand in front of the column.â
Kate acknowledged him with a small nod before William said, âFinally, some fresh air.â Kate giggled and replied: âI know. Itâs absolutely incredible. Can you hear that?â
According to Hickling, William commented on the flypast, saying, âIâm sure itâs the first one.â Kate then said to him, âItâs left,â to which the prince counters, âWait, itâs this one. Itâs right.â The princess insisted again, âLeft.â After a moment, William conceded that she was correct and agreed, âAh it is. Yes.â

A tourist sat on a â??Van Goghâ? chair at an art gallery before the piece collapsed underneath him. CCTV footage showed a man and a woman inside the Palazzo Maffei art museum in Verona.
