In response to a video of the meltdown on X, a user claiming to be volunteer posted a photo of the hole left by the driver head alongside the caption: "Scared me to death."

Clark made the cut in North Carolina before posting rounds of 73 and 74 over the weekend to finish in a tie for 50th place.

The 31-year-old has suffered with poor form at majors since his 2023 US Open Win at The Los Angeles Country Club.

His result at Quail Hollow marks the seventh consecutive time he has finished outside of the top 30 in a major championship since his major win two years ago.

After sending his ball 322 yards straight into a bunker on Sunday afternoon, Clark turned in disgust and smashed his club, removing the head in the process.

He then picked up the shaft before tossing it to one side.

His meltdown ironically took place in front of a T-Mobile billboard, a brand the golfer has been an ambassador for since April 2024.

Clark wasn't the only one guilty of letting his frustrations get the better of him this weekend.

Shane Lowry lost his cool on the eight hole on Friday after not being granted relief for an embedded ball.

The Irishman took a chunk out of the fairway after shanking his shot before making a bogey.

On his way to missing the cut alongside Lowry, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton also had an X-rated meltdown.

The LIV golfer was seen screaming at his club after finding the water on the 18th.

Angry outbursts are punished by fines by the PGA Tour, however the details of the punishments are not disclosed in order to protect players' images.

However, there are calls to make these player conduct violations public.

In almost every other professional sport, there is transparency around player discipline and many believe changes to the PGA Tour policy is long overdue.

Another confidential part of golf - club testing - was under the spotlight this weekend, as Rory McIlroy was forced to change his driver after it was deemed 'non-conforming'.

Random testing of the field by USGA is standard procedure and it is common for players to have to switch out clubs which fails to meet standards.

However as unfounded accusations of cheating emerged on social media, the PGA released a statement to shut down any rumours.

“Finding driver heads that have crept over the line of conformance is not an unusual occurrence, especially for clubs that are hit thousands of times over a long period of time,” said Chief Championships Officer Kerry Haigh via a statement.

“The results are kept confidential to protect players, who are unaware the club has fallen out of conformance and not responsible for it falling out of conformance other than hitting the club thousands of times.

“Players are simply asked to change heads if necessary, and all do without issue.

"To publicly identify players whose club did not conform can lead to that player being questioned unnecessarily. Neither the USGA nor the PGA of America have any concerns about player intent.”

And it turned out the reigning Masters champions wasn't alone in losing his driver.

Scottie Scheffler, who claimed his first PGA Championship title and his third career major on Sunday, also confirmed he had fallen foul of the regulations.

"My driver did fail me this week," said the 28-year-old.

"We had a feeling that it was going to be coming because I've used that driver for over a year. I was kind of fortunate for it to last that long, I felt like."
