Man United have three players to blame for defeat in Europa League final
Man Utd conceded to Tottenham when Brennan Johnson struck at the end of the first half in the Europa League in Bilbao.
Finals are often decided by moments and Tottenham Hotspur won their first trophy since 2008 thanks to one of the only moments of polished attacking play in the Europa League showpiece.
Rodrigo Bentancur made a clever run to trigger the move, Pape Matar Sarr sent a cross into the corridor of uncertainty and Brennan Johnson was there to poke home beyond Andre Onana at the front post.
Johnson got in between Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu to execute a scruffy finish. Shaw looked at Dorgu with contempt, which suggested he felt his teammate was responsible for the goal.
The blame game has begun for the Europa League final and Ruben Amorim will take the brunt of it.
Amorim got his team selection wrong, he got his tactics wrong and he offered to quit without receiving any compensation if United believe he is no longer good enough to be their coach.
United are not expected to make a change, although plans are under way to gut the dressing room, despite it probably not being possible to facilitate the type of overhaul that is required.
Outgoings should reach double digits this summer and fresh blood is needed because the majority of players at the club are not good to represent United following an utterly joyless season.
There are question marks around almost every one, including the three who were involved with Tottenham's goal. Shaw has not looked himself since returning from injury, Onana is an error-strewn goalkeeper and Dorgu hasn't made a strong impression in his first few months following his transfer from Lecce.
Dorgu will be cut some slack because he's only just signed for United, but the bulk of the blame for Tottenham's completely avoidable goal in the 41st minute should fall on his shoulders.
There is no doubt that Shaw and Onana are also culpable, but Dorgu could see what was developing in front of him, and he was pointed and shouted at by Shaw to pick up Johnson.
Dorgu was slow to react, but he actually got close enough to Johnson to place his hands on his back. Then Johnson moved quickly and Dorgu allowed him to connect with the cross.
The second freeze from Tottenham's goal in the frame-by-frame graphic below is not kind to Dorgu, who should be standing goalside of Johnson.
The frame-by-frame stills from Tottenham's goal.
Shaw is also partly responsible and is not absolved of guilt. He shouted and pointed at Dorgu, and then checked to see his position again, so he would argue that it was his teammate's responsibility, but he came across to be closer to Dominic Solanke when Harry Maguire had him covered.
It was an embarrassing mix-up of communication and Onana undoubtedly should have done better to stop it, as Johnson's connection wasn't clean and he bundled the ball in at the front post.
Onana's position was good and he shouldn't have been beaten by the scruffy finish, which trickled in the space of just a few yards of the goal line that he should have had covered.
Shaw's reaction when the ball hits the net is worth noting again. He immediately looks at an expressionless Dorgu and the England international clearly felt that his left wing-back was mostly at fault.
Dorgu didn't react quickly enough to Shaw's instructions and was sluggish. There was even a communication warning sign earlier in the half when Dorgu cleared the ball for a corner when he was under no pressure. Onana and Shaw shouted to alert that there was no pressure, but Dorgu anxiously kicked it away.
Perhaps that atmosphere at the Estadio de San Mames was so loud that Dorgu didn't hear, or he was simply overawed in a European final just months after signing from Lecce.
He is still only 20. That also begs the question: Should Shaw have taken responsibility for Johnson as the senior player? There are a few ways you can look at Tottenham's goal.
The bottom line is all three players share the blame and United had plenty of time to respond in the second half, but they were toothless in attack and disgraced themselves against an awful Tottenham side.
It was a shameful team performance, fittingly produced at the end of a shameful season.
