Met Gala 2025 'feels different' with 'people realising what true style is'
This year's Met Gala is upon us and experts are indicating something feels different this time around after Anna Wintour revealed the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style theme
The fashion event of the year is here and stars from around the globe will once again grace the iconic Met Gala red carpet in New York tonight (Monday, May 5). The annual haute couture fundraising festival is Christmas for fashion fans and its guests desperately try to follow the specific theme.
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour along with actor Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, musician-turned-fashion-mogul Pharrell Williams and honorary chair LeBron James are co-chairing the event this time around, with experts saying it "feels different".
This year's theme is 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style', with the accompanying dress code is 'Tailored for You'. And according to American singer and actress - and huge fashionista - Shannon K, this year's bash "feels different in the best way".
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Shannon said: "It’s about culture, roots, and real style—not just theatrics. I love that it’s putting elegance and tailored menswear at the forefront. Fashion should say something, and this theme for sure does."
She explained that she "wouldn't be surprised" if we see "more power suits that transform or pay tribute to iconic style moments" this time around. Shannon thinks the celebs might find themselves "playing around with statement accessories, layered symbolism, and silhouettes that evolve right on the carpet".

However, she confessed: "I’m hoping for a new face who isn’t afraid to take a risk and ends up stealing the spotlight. There’s always space for a fresh fashion icon to emerge."
It's a hope that is echoed by Mini Vohra, founder and Managing Director of Cornucopia Group. The owners of one of the world’s largest provider of exclusive access to invitation-only events said: "Look out for the underdogs and the unexpected. The biggest surprise may not come from Hollywood royalty — but from someone the world doesn’t yet associate with fashion.
"A billionaire. A tech founder. Maybe even someone from old money stepping onto the carpet with real polish and presence. That kind of quiet power is going to turn heads this year."
Mini added: "As someone who works closely with billionaire clients and some of the world’s most photographed faces, I can tell you — this year is going to be a shift. Less costume, more character. People are realising that true style isn’t about shouting, it’s about knowing exactly who you are and owning it.
"Expect cleaner lines, smarter tailoring, and a move back to timeless looks that photograph just as well today as they will in twenty years." And he teased: "As for who to watch — well, I can’t give everything away. But if I’ve dressed someone, they’ll be the one you’ll remember."
Following last year's slight backlash over the Met Gala, Mini admitted the event is still the "highest stage in fashion".
However, he went on to day that while the Met won't go anywhere "it does need to keep evolving".
"The public can tell the difference between authenticity and attention-seeking," he said. "If it leans too far into gimmicks, it risks becoming a costume party. But when it’s done right? It’s iconic. And this year, I think we’re getting back to the real thing."
