Michelle Ryan breaks silence on Zoe Slater's EastEnders return after 20 years
Zoe was last seen saying goodbye to London to move to Walford
Michelle Ryan has broken her silence after returning to EastEnders following the actressâ 20 year absence from Albert Square.
Following weeks of rumours surrounding the BBC soap, Michelle returned to the programme that made her a star on Monday night (June 16)
Zoe was last seen in 2005, deciding to move to Ibiza to start a new life after being cleared of Dirty Den Wattsâ murder, who she was left pregnant by before having an abortion.
The characterâs most iconic moment arrived in the âyou ainât my motherâ scene in 2001 when Kat Slater revealed she wasnât actually her sister.
Despite fans wanting Zoe to return for two decades, she has only been mentioned on several occasions over the years.
However, EastEnders new boss Ben Wadey, who replaced Chris Clenshaw as Executive Producer, delivered what every viewer wanted with his first episode.

After a weekend of social media teasers and the episode not being released early on the iPlayer, Zoe made her entrance.
Zoe was teased throughout the episode, with Stacey Slater appearing to be living with her in a flat in recent weeks after taking a break from Walford.
With the flat a mess and empty bottles scattered on the floor, Zoe could be heard puking in the bathroom prior to her identity being revealed.
A worried Stacey called Alfie for help when she couldnât find Zoe, who reintroduced herself to both Alfie and viewers after decades.
Speaking to the BBC on why she decided to go back to EastEnders, Michelle admitted that âit all happened at the right timeâ.
âIâd already been thinking about a return because Iâd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and Iâd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character.
âIt just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and Iâm so excited to be back.
âWhen Ben pitched me the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision,â she said.

Asked how it feels to be back, Michelle revealed that it âfeels like coming homeâ and that she felt like sheâd ânever been awayâ after her first few scenes.
Teasing whatâs next for Zoe, she added: âI canât say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess.
âSheâs not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and sheâs been really struggling on her own. She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.â
