On 'Sister Wives,' Kody, Janelle, Meri and more reveal how they took news of Garrison's death
Garrison Brown of 'Sister Wives' took his own life in March 2024. On the polygamist-themed reality show, the cast members reveal how they reacted to the news.
News of son Garrison Brownâs suicide blindsided the core cast of âSister Wives.â
One by one, on Sundayâs episode of the TLC reality show, father Kody Brown, his wife Robyn and the women who used to consider him their husband â Meri, Janelle and Christine â told how they found out about Garrisonâs death.
The cameras were trained on Meri Brown as she sat on a couch and prepared to talk about her birthday. âThatâs weird. Kodyâs calling me,â she said, looking toward her phone and mentioning the man she had called her husband until January 2023.
âDo you want to take it?â a crew member asked. âNope,â she replied. âHe can text me if he needs me.â
âHeâs calling again,â she said later, appearing annoyed. âI already texted him.â
Then she said, âHe said itâs an emergency.â The crew called cut and she got on the phone. âWhat?â she asked. Then the picture dissolved into text: âOn March 5, 2024, Kody and Janelleâs son Garrison passed away.â
Garrison, who was 25 when he died, was one of the former familyâs 18 children. He was found by younger brother Gabriel, Meri said.
âIt is with great sadness I confirm Mr. Robert Garrison Brown was located in his residence deceased, as a result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,â police told The Times last March.

Garrisonâs roommates and his brother Gabriel told police that Garrison had been struggling with a drinking problem and possible mental health issues. But Gabriel said his brother had started a job at a medical facility and seemed âOK.â
âIt was just this weird, weird, surreal moment thatâs like, âNo ... not one of our kids. Theyâre not going to do that,ââ Meri said later in the episode. âAnd Iâm like, âAre you kidding me?â and heâs like, âNo.ââ
Robyn, who was the last wife to join the previously polygamous group and is Kodyâs legal wife, said her husband looked âreally shockedâ when he came into the room where she was working.
âIâm just trying to gather the details, trying to figure out whatâs going on, trying to be there for him, trying to register the shock myself. Trying to register whatâs going on myself,â Robyn said. âAnd â he just fell apart.â
Christine, meanwhile, said she âfell on the floorâ after getting a rare phone call from son Hunter, whose biological mom is Janelle.
âHe just said, âGarrison killed himself.â And I just fell on the floor in the office. ... We all knew that he was sad,â she said, then trailed off, saying âand then we all hoped that he would just ... â before going silent.
Biological mom Janelle shed tears throughout her testimony.
âSo Gabriel had found him,â she said. âHeâs like, âMom, heâs gone.â And Iâm like, âWhat do you mean?â And heâs like, âHeâs dead. He killed himself.â
Janelle said she didnât remember the next few minutes, but said through tears, âI got in the car and I drove.â
Garrison was introduced in 2010 during the debut season of the âSister Wivesâ reality series, which chronicles the highs and lows of a polygamist family headed by Kody. The series has followed the family during its time living in Lehi, Utah, Las Vegas and Flagstaff. Janelle, Meri and Christine have ended their marriages to Kody, while Robyn remains his legal wife. Although marriage to more than one individual at a time is not legally recognized in the United States, Kody has called his relationships with the women âspiritual unions.â
Before his death, Garrison texted a group of people whom the family works with, writing, âI want to hate you for sharing the good times. But I canât. I miss these days.â According to a police report, hearing about that message prompted Janelle to text Garrison, who was estranged from dad Kody. They had a short conversation that ended abruptly.
âHe was a bright spot in the lives of all who knew him,â Janelle posted on Instagram at the time. âHis loss will leave such a big hole in our lives that it takes our breath away.â
Kody had just that kind of visceral reaction, he said in Sundayâs episode.
âThe first moment the grief really clobbered me was when I was sitting down with [daughter] Gwendlyn holding her hand,â he said. âI look inside myself, Iâm looking down my esophagus, in my imagination, and into my lungs. And I feel this sort of grief come up out of me. Everybodyâs silent. I think that Gwendolynâs sobbing and Robynâs trying to console her. This grief comes out of me and I wailed.
âAnd thatâs when I first I think became really aware that this situation has gone down and itâs just sort of unreconcilable. I just donât know what to do. Iâm lost in this.â
