Postecoglou's rousing Spurs speech and revealing the moment that inspired win
Ange Postecoglou produced a brilliant speech to the families of the Tottenham squad after their Europa League final win against Manchester United
Ange Postecoglou has stated he has "never been prouder to be a manager of a football club" after guiding Tottenham Hotspur to silverware. Spurs' 17-year wait for a trophy finally came to an end on Wednesday evening after they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.
Brennan Johnson proved to be the hero on the night after converting Pape Matar Sarr's cross just prior to half-time. Spurs were put under pressure in the second half and they needed some brilliance from Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven to ensure they remained ahead in Bilbao.
Tottenham did manage to hang on and the post-match scenes were really quite something special as 17 years of pain came to an end. The victory also saw Postecoglou keep his proud record of winning silverware in his second season at a club intact.
The 59-year-old is well known for his passionate speeches before and after games and his players do hang on his every word. This Sunday we may well see Postecoglou do likewise following the conclusion of Tottenham's Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion as the Europa League trophy is very likely to be paraded in front of the home fans.
Following the team's Europa League success in the Basque Country, Postecoglou paid tribute to the families of the Tottenham players with a classy speech that has since been doing the rounds on social media (via @thespursweb on X). In his short time on stage, the head coach hailed his players and their families as well as giving an insight into the pre-match moment that inspired the team.
"I'm used to people listening when I talk so....I just want to say that I made a big thing for us as a group about family this year and how important family is," he said.
"These boys, I am so proud of them and the staff. They have been the best family that I could ever be associated with but more importantly is everyone in this room and how you have helped these boys become champions.
"They truly deserve it, they are outstanding people, not just outstanding players. I could not be prouder to be their manager, and I want everyone to enjoy tonight and what it means because every single one of you deserve it from the bottom of my heart.
"I have never been prouder to be a manager of a football club, than a manager of these players and the people with them. You, their families, trust me, I played a video before the game and it inspired them to win this game today. Every single one of them is a champion, well done and enjoy the night."
