Readers sound off on a Trump parade, street sweeper cameras and assisted suicide

Don’t let a draft-dodger upstage our veterans
Jefferson Valley, N.Y.: President Trump, who never served in the military and has publicly insulted it by refusing to go to a cemetery that honored American World War I dead while in France “because of the weather” (those buried there could not make that choice), has constantly allowed reductions in Veterans Affairs hospital funding, has publicly demeaned the heroism of John McCain and has expressed desire for officers “like Hitler’s generals” (probably referring to those who went along with Hitler in things like the Holocaust, not those who tried to assassinate him) has tried to turn the celebration of the birthday of the U.S. Army into a celebration of his birthday, spending $45 million of taxpayer money in the process.
Supposedly, there will be 50 helicopters used in this Trump birthday extravaganza. The American public should boycott this insult to the Army.
Television networks should run specials on U.S. military history — Washington crossing the Delaware, Eisenhower’s D-Day assault on Europe, MacArthur’s surprise Inchon landing in South Korea, and the number of Vietnam veterans dying in VA hospitals from Agent Orange-related illnesses. They should tell us the number of American casualties in each war or “police action,” stressing that no matter how worthy or flawed the overall policy of the conflict, the American GI followed orders, and many gave up their lives.
Furthermore, the television networks should show not one minute of the Agent Orange in the White House’s co-opting of the Army’s birthday for his own $45 million self-gratification. John F. McMullen
A day to remember
Flushing: Friday, June 6, was the anniversary of D-Day. Not a mention in the paper. Thousands sacrificed their lives so we can have the freedom we now enjoy. It is important that the Greatest Generation is remembered every day. John Weiss
Secretive police
Brooklyn: Why are ICE agents covering their faces as they make arrests? This smacks of police-state tactics like those of the KGB, Gestapo or Stasi, the secret police of East Germany. Police in the U.S. arrest criminals of all sorts without this. Is this a taste of things to come? Martin Selbst
Intimidation tactic?
Manhattan: If ICE agents are performing good, honorable, legal work, why are they hiding behind masks? If ICE enforcers are performing good, honorable, legal work, they should be proud of and want to be known for what they do. What do they fear? There’s yet to be one reported reprisal. Or is it that these numbers of burly men feel the need to look tougher and scarier as they take down one thin, frightened, unprepared man? Richard Rosenthal
Taxes sustain us
Yonkers: I am a sad American — sad because I have seen my friends and family believe that the rich man in Washington will take our welfare. We can’t have tax cuts for the wealthy and keep paying health care for the old and the poor. The math doesn’t add up. What I believe to be a con is blaming everything else for our problems rather than facing the fact that to finance the needs of society, the solution is not to cut taxes to those who have better toys — it is to be better citizens. Illegals must become legal. You hire an illegal, you must pay a fine. Everyone must pay taxes. We pay them all our lives to reach old age or be sick and have help when needed, not to give more benefits to those already blessed with better livelihoods. Don’t blame others to get your tax cuts. Do our wealthy citizens really need another one? Joe Gomes
Gonna say it?
Jamaica: We all knew that Trump and Elon Musk would end their relationship, it was just a matter of time. However, I’m still waiting to hear those familiar words: “I never really knew him,” or “I didn’t know him that well, and didn’t really trust him.” Shirley Watts
Heard that before
Manhattan: To Voicer Mahatma Kane Jeeves: So sorry to read about your problems running your business. So interesting that you share your name with the name of that legendary comic W.C. Fields portrayed in his movies. “Mahatma Kane Jeeves” was meant to suggest an aristocrat who says to his butler when walking out, “My hat, my cane, Jeeves.” Be patient, Mr. Jeeves, happy days will soon be here again! Karene Copeland
Affront to our values
Somerset, N.J.: I will listen to all of your explanations and justifications. You can call me a “self-loathing Jew” if you wish. However, I am simply a Jew who does not believe that the Halacha (Jewish law) that does not even permit us to wage war against fruit trees could possibly allow us to wage war against the children of Gaza. Morris D. Fried
Stadium distractions
Manhattan: As a traditionalist baseball fan, I enjoy visiting Yankee Stadium far more than Citi Field because of the difference in digital noise between them. The Yankees engage with their fans between innings by scanning the stands and displaying the images. Their visuals are not accompanied by any noise. People who want to talk about the game or just chat can hear each other. By contrast, the digital noise in Citi Field is relentless. The silly games that pander to young children between innings are appropriate in minor league ballparks but are annoying and have no place in larger major league venues. The Mets would do well to concentrate on putting a competitive team on the field. Marc H. Lavietes
Separate issues
Port Jefferson Station, L.I.: To Voicer Duane Doberman: Thank you for commenting on my letter regarding free stuff offered by Zohran Mamdani to buy your vote. I’m so sorry that you do not understand the consequences of having a low-intelligence person again running NYC. Nothing is free, yet you counter with my lack of concern about the “millions” of dollars we taxpayers spend on Trump and his cronies playing golf. One thing has nothing to do with the other. Continue voting for Dems who will spend your money, make you more dependent on them and take away your choices in other fields. Are you aware that the new energy laws in New York (a blue state for now) will increase your utility bill by at least $1,000 per year? That comes directly from Con Ed, who should know. I am an Independent, not MAGA, but people like you seem comfortable assigning names to others you do not know. Bob Cavaliere
Street squeezers
Brooklyn: As a car owner, I strongly oppose the City Council’s vote for mounted cameras on the Sanitation Department’s street sweepers. What is the purpose of having them when you already have police, traffic agents and Sanitation supervisors issuing tickets during alternate-side parking? This sounds like overkill and a shakedown. If you have a stalled vehicle and you get flashed by the cameras, it would be no use trying to fight the ticket with those hearing judges at the Department of Finance. They are in the city’s pocket and their primary objective is to find you guilty regardless of how much evidence you present, and to make you pay. They come across as impartial, but these hearings are nothing but a charade. Can somebody tell me how many of those Council members who voted in favor of this bill own a car? Ronald L. Badger
Never give up
Larchmont, N.Y.: Please fight against this heinous thing called assisted suicide so that it never passes as a law! If it does, it will open the door to looser interpretations and I’m terrified of this! I am a Catholic and believe that God is the one to make this choice, not us! Millions of mentally ill people will choose this when all they need is better mental health care. This is what should be worked on — saving lives, not ending them! The very thought that this is on the table is tragic, terrifying and downright evil! Human life is precious, even in suffering. Please, for the love of life, fight this. Sabra Salzarulo
