Shaboozey is going viral for his reaction to fellow country star Megan Moroney crediting the Carter Family with having “basically invented country music” while they presented at the American Music Awards Monday.
The “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” crooner, 30, introduced the Favorite Country Duo or Group Award by pointing to “country music [as] … an important part of AMA history.
“The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride,” said Grammy nominee Shaboozey, real name Collins Obinna Chibueze.

“That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson,” said Moroney, 27. “And this award went to the Carter Family, who basically invented country music.”
The “First Family of Country Music” — which at one point included June Carter — owe some of their own legacy to the teachings of local Black musician Lesley Riddle.
Shaboozey seemed to side-eyed the “No Caller ID” singer when she read the remark from the teleprompter.
Some have thought Shaboozey was confused, given that another Carter — Beyoncé — has had recent success with a country album, on which Shaboozey features. Others have thought he felt the comment discounted Black artists’ role in originating the genre.
The country crooner paused and emitted a little laugh before he continued with their presentation.
Both Shaboozey and Moroney were nominated at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony. The former was nominated in seven categories: New Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Social Song of the Year, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Male Country Artist, Favorite Country Album, and Favorite Country Song.
Moroney, meanwhile, was nominated for Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album, losing both honors to Beyoncé and the latter’s “Cowboy Carter” album.
