Smokey Robinson has reportedly landed in legal trouble with his four former housekeepers, who are accusing him of sexual battery and rape among other inappropriate behavior.
According to Los Angeles outlet KABC, the women filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, May 6, accusing the legendary soul singer-songwriter of the aforementioned allegations along with fostering a hostile work environment, underpayment and exploitative hours. The women, who seek $50 million in damages, alleged that many of the acts were conducted at Robinsonâs Chatsworth home between 2007 to 2024. Robinsonâs wife, Frances Gladney, is also named in the lawsuit for knowing about the alleged misconduct and attacking the women with ethnic slurs.
âWe believe that Mr. Robinson is a serial and sick rapist, and must be stopped,â said the groupâs attorney, John Harris, during a news conference.Â
Each of the four women maintains that Robinson, 85, would rape and sexually abuse them when alone in the house despite their protests. The former housekeepers, whose identities have not been revealed, claim that their silence stemmed from being paid less than minimum wage and not receiving overtime. The women also did not report the alleged sexual assaults to police out of intimidation of Robinsonâs high-profile status.Â
âThey all feared missing a payday and not being able to pay their rent or buy food for their families,â said Harris.
