When Rico Lewis was watching the European Championship with his mates last summer, one player kept catching his eye.
The Manchester City academy graduate was impressed by Tijjani Reijnders's performances for the Netherlands in the 2024 tournament, and a year later, he will now get the chance to play alongside him for his club.
The 26-year-old Reijnders was one of City's four recruits in the early June transfer window, joining for a fee of around £46million from AC Milan and taking over Kalvin Phillips' number four shirt at the Etihad.
Some of his new teammates might be getting their first proper glimpse of the reigning Serie A midfielder of the year during training in Boca Raton ahead of the Club World Cup, but Lewis already knows all about him and is confident he has what it takes to thrive in a Pep Guardiola midfield.
Lewis particularly cited Reijnders's ability to progress the ball as one of his great strengths. He added goals and assists to his game in Italy last season.
"When I was watching him in the last Euros and, you know, I was talking to my mates about him, and he was one of my favourite players at the tournament in terms of midfielders, he’s so good," said Lewis.
"He’s so good at progressing the play. But also, you know, like a typical Man City midfielder where they keep the ball, they never lose it, and you can see he’s got the ability to get goals and assists as well. So, I think he’s a well-rounded midfielder that’s just going to elevate our game."
Reijnders and fellow new boys Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki will bring a freshness to the squad during their stay in the United States.

The Club World Cup offers City and Guardiola the chance to make a statement ahead of the new season, having endured what for them was a difficult campaign last term, winning just the Community Shield, although they did recover to finish third in the Premier League.
"I think, when you actually look at the whole season, from an outsider’s perspective, if they didn’t know anything, it would be harsh to call it a poor or a really, really poor season because we ended up coming third, we got to our final and stuff like that in the FA Cup," said Lewis.
"But, yeah, like you say, from our standards, it’s not good enough. And, yeah, I think, definitely, it’s something that we want to take to elevate the game and give the fans a lift. Give ourselves a lift as well, because doing well in this tournament, winning this tournament would definitely give ourselves a lift and confidence. And also it’ll give the fans something to feel excited [about] for the new season."
