The end really is near. British rock legends the Who are hitting the road one last time, and Vancouver is on the itinerary.
As part of the just-announced The Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour, the iconic band will perform at Rogers Arena on September 23. Yes, for real this time—according to the members.
The tour title nods to the Who's 1971 classic of the same name, and if you’re reading this wondering whether to grab tickets, the answer is yes. This is expected to be the final curtain call for one of the most influential rock bands of all time, a group that’s soundtracked generations of rebellion, revolution, and righteous guitar smashing.
Founding members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are the last men standing from the original lineup, but they’re still bringing the heat. This tour promises a catalogue-spanning setlist, from My Generation and Substitute to Baba O’Riley and Won’t Get Fooled Again.
In a live press conference from London, Daltrey reflected on the band’s relationship with North American audiences. “Every musician’s dream in the early '60s was to make it big in the US charts,” he shared. “For the Who, that dream came true in 1967 and our lives were changed forever.”
Townshend echoed the sentiment, calling the tour “poignant”.
“Although the road has not always been enjoyable for me, it is usually easy: the best job I could ever have had,” Townshend added. “I keep coming back. Every time I do, I meet new fans and feel new energy. Roger and I are in a good place, despite our age, eager to throw our weight behind this fond farewell to all our faithful fans, and hopefully to new ones who might jump in to see what they have been missing for the last 57 years.”
The band's cultural impact is impossible to overstate. The Who has racked up 27 top-forty singles in the U.S. and U.K., earned nine U.S. and ten U.K. top ten albums, and delivered unforgettable sets at Woodstock, Live Aid, Glastonbury and the 2010 Super Bowl halftime show. The group has even been immortalised in museum form, as an American football helmet from the sleeve of their Odds & Sods album was recently returned from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just in time for this farewell press blitz.
Tickets go on sale May 16, with VIP experiences also available, including access to soundcheck and signed tour merch. Whooligans (yes, that’s the fan club name) can register early for presales, plus score a copy of Live at The Oval 1971, an unreleased concert newly mixed from the original tapes.
Vancouver is one of just two Canadian stops on the tour (the other being a double-header in Toronto) so don’t count on a redo. If you’ve ever blasted Who Are You on a road trip, screamed Pinball Wizard at karaoke, or dramatically quoted “hope I die before I get old” in your youth, consider this your moment.
