Scott Mills on tough chat with husband and decision on having children
The Radio 2 Breakfast star, who is currently preparing to host the Eurovision Song Contest, opened up on his relationship with husband Sam Vaughan and how life has been since taking the coveted slot in December
Scott Mills is riding high on what he describes as the best year of his life, and he attributes this fantastic run to one major event – getting married. Last year, Scott exchanged vows with his partner Sam Vaughan, and the newlyweds went on to clinch victory in BBC's Celebrity Race Across The World.
To top it off, in November Scott was unveiled as the successor to Zoe Ball for the coveted Radio 2 Breakfast Show slot. Reflecting on a whirlwind year Scott, 52, told the Mirror: "I had such a mad year last year, it was the best year of my life," and added: "I'm honestly the happiest I've ever been in my life."
It's evident that life is treating Scott well, and he believes that the sense of security and stability provided by his husband Sam, 36, has been instrumental in propelling his career to new heights. "I honestly feel that because I feel safe and secure with him that every area has fallen into place," he said.
This newfound equilibrium, Scott suggests, translates into his professional performance and overall demeanour. "That will affect how good you are on air, how you appear, how you look, if you look happy. People now say to me every day 'Oh my God, you look so happy with life.' And maybe they wouldn't have said that before. I really feel like I finally sorted it out and everything is in order."
Scott, whose primary passion lies in radio presenting, is also a familiar face on television. As we chat, he's gearing up to head to Basel in Switzerland to present the Eurovision Song Contest for the BBC.

However, before finding his partner Sam, the thought of live TV filled him with dread. "I did The One Show on Friday," he said.
"Even five years ago, the idea of that would have terrified me. On Friday I was the most relaxed person on that sofa and I actually do think it's because in every area I just feel chill. It took me some time to find Sam, but was it worth it? 100% yes."
For many couples, having children seems like the natural progression after marriage, and Scott has shown signs of being broody on Instagram, especially when doting on his young nephew, Fred, whom he recently accompanied to the Paddington Bear Experience. Yet, Scott isn't convinced about becoming a parent himself, particularly given his hectic schedule.
"I've got a dog and I find that quite a lot now because I get up at 4am," he admitted with a chuckle. "No, I love being an uncle – I'm the best uncle ever. You'll get the best presents from me, you'll get all the love in the world but I cannot imagine getting up at 4am and having children. I just cannot. Hats off to anyone who does that because I've got enough trouble from looking after one dog. I get to do cool uncle stuff. Sam's sister has a little boy called Fred who's three now so I got to take him to the Paddington Experience and you just get to do great stuff and then you can be like, 'Bye!' So for now, I think that'll do us."
The shift to early morning starts is a significant lifestyle adjustment for Scott, but how does his husband Sam feel about the change from cosy late nights to 4am wake-up calls? For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.
"Well, one of the reasons I married him is that he is actually the most chilled out person on the planet," shared Scott, who has just sprung another potentially disruptive work project on his spouse of nearly a year.
“There’s something else coming up soon, where we might have to lose an entire holiday. It’s something that I should probably do because it’s quite big but we’re going to have to move everything and it’s all booked. This happens a lot. It was the same when I had the conversation about the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. I’m just completely honest – I tell it exactly like it is. Then I’ll say, ‘So I’ll leave that with you.’ But so far, every single time he’s completely like, ‘Yes, I think you should do that.’ That’s another reason I love him, because he’s so incredibly supportive of every single thing that I do. He just gets it, but before I said yes to this dream job on Radio 2, we did have to have that conversation.”
Scott places great importance on regular date nights and trips with his spouse Sam to ensure their marriage thrives. "If anything, it's made us more aware that the time we do spend together is so brilliant and so precious," he shares.
"Sam will block weekends out in our diary and go 'That weekend we're going away,' or 'We're going out for dinner that night.' Date nights are absolutely key to the relationship."
His next project is Eurovision, where he teams up once again with friend Rylan Clark, a partnership that dates back to 2018. "I love him, I love it," he said, adding: "It's my favourite week of the whole year. This is my Christmas. I literally count down the days."
The duo is set to head to Basel and Scott humorously noted that the BBC ensures they travel together, partly as a preventive measure so Rylan doesn’t end up lost. He reminisces about the time when Eurovision was held in Liverpool and he assisted Rylan in catching his first intercity train.
"That probably is the reason why we're on the same flight because I have to show him what to do," he said. "He hates travelling alone. If Rylan has to go somewhere, even if he has to pay the fare, he will always want to travel with someone else. He just wants to chat."
Scott is eagerly anticipating a catch-up with Rylan, who has recently returned from filming the second series of his Paramount+ show Dating Naked. "We'll have a really good catch-up because I hadn't seen that he's been away doing the filming for the show with the naked people," he shares, chuckling.
"He'll tell me all about that and about the latest things he's had done in his house."
However, what Scott is most keen to discuss is Rylan's romantic situation. Since divorcing his ex-husband Dan Neal in 2021, Rylan has remained single, and Scott hopes to help him find someone akin to his own spouse.
"Rylan needs to find his version of Sam because that's what he needs," he suggests. "Sometimes Rylan is like, 'Oh, I wish I had someone like Sam,' and it's like, 'Hey, you have got all the time in the world.' I know deep down he would love to find somebody."

Scott himself found lasting love in his forties when he met Sam, after nearly resigning himself to the idea that it might not happen for him. "It took me a long time to find the right one," he admits.
"Not discounting any of my other relationships because I'm on good terms with people. But it took me quite a long time and it's worth it in the end because you know it's the right thing."
