Warner Bros and DC have released the first full trailer for James Gunn’s much-anticipated ‘Superman,’ the opening salvo in the director’s newly rebooted DC Universe of films.
The movie, which will introduce the world to a new Man of Steel played by rising star David Corenswet, gained considerable positive buzz with the release of a teaser trailer four months ago. However, this three-minute clip gives audiences a much fuller look at the world, characters, and tone Gunn is shooting for with this new version of the ‘Last Son of Krypton.’
Making stirring use of John Williams’ classic Superman: The Movie score, the trailer depicts Clark Kent/Superman grappling with how to be a hero in our modern world. Metropolis is a bright, shiny city of the future, filled to the brim with supervillains, giant monsters, and other DC superheroes, as well as Superman’s canine companion, Krypto the Superdog, appearing in live-action film for the first time.
Gunn posted the trailer on X with the accompanying message, “Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are. #Superman.”
His movie stars Corenswet (We Own This City) as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvellous Mrs Maisel) as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu) as Lex Luthor, Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Rick Flag Sr, and Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus) as Hawkgirl.
Warner Bros and DC will be hoping that it has backed the right horse by giving Gunn the keys to their fictional kingdom, although his CV would indicate he’s more than capable of being the man for the job. After all, he oversaw three enormously successful Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel before jumping ship to DC to make The Suicide Squad and its spinoff Peacemaker TV series. Gunn is dubbing his first phase of new DC films ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,’ with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface – based on the monstrous Batman villain – to follow in 2026.
Superman is undeniably Warner Bros’ tentpole summer release, although the studio will also have high hopes for Joseph Kosinski’s F1, starring Brad Pitt, and Zach Cregger’s secretive horror flick Weapons, which will hit on June 25th and August 8th, respectively. As for Gunn’s soaring superhero spectacle, it will arrive internationally on July 9th, 2025, before coming to US theatres two days later on July 11th.
