'Real reason' Liam Payne's girlfriend Kate Cassidy won't get £24m fortune

She has been left with nothing following the singer's death

Liam Payne died without a will and left behind a staggering £24m fortune - but his girlfriend Kate Cassidy will not receive a penny.

The 31-year-old singer's estate will be managed by ex-partner Cheryl Cole - who he shared young son Bear with - and music industry lawyer Richard Bray.

As administrators of his estate, they will manage the money but it is understood they currently have limited authority and cannot distribute it.

Liam was reportedly financially supporting Kate during their relationship and a note which came to light after his death suggested he planned to marry her.

Despite being in a long-term relationship with Liam, the influencer will not inherit any of the late singer's funds.

If you die without making a will, UK law says your children will normally inherit your estate if there is no living spouse or civil partner.

Solicitor Kathryn Tunbridge, who works for legal firm Furley Page, said Kate has 'no automatic entitlement' to Liam's estate.

She said: "The untimely death of Liam Payne at just 31 has shocked the world.

"But beyond the emotional response, his passing has drawn attention to a serious legal issue: he died without leaving a will."

Ms Tunbridge added: "Because Liam died intestate (without a valid will), his estate will be dealt with under the rules of intestacy in England and Wales.

"These rules provide that the entire estate passes to the deceased’s children where the deceased did not have a spouse or civil partner.

"As an unmarried partner, Kate has no automatic entitlement to inherit anything - regardless of how long they were together or whether he supported her financially."

Wills can be made 'in contemplation of marriage' which means that Kate may have been entitled to Liam's fortune had the former ITV The X Factor star 'referenced his intention to marry' her in his will.

If they had tied the knot before his death, Kate as the surviving spouse would have been set to inherit the first £322,000 of his estate, all his personal belongings and half of the remaining estate as the other half would have gone to Bear.

Ms Tunbridge said Kate could potentially claim against Liam's estate.

She said: "Under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, someone financially dependent on the deceased at the time of death may be able to claim 'reasonable financial provision' from the estate."

But these types of claims need evidence and can often be both 'emotionally and financially draining', Ms Tunbridge said.

She added: "Liam Payne’s death is a tragedy.

"But it also serves as a powerful reminder of how important it is to plan ahead — particularly for unmarried couples.

"Without a will, even deeply held intentions can go unfulfilled, and those closest to you may be left with nothing.

"If you’re in a serious relationship, especially if you’re not married or in a civil partnership, it’s essential to understand where the law stands — and take steps to make your wishes legally binding."

Liam, from Wolverhampton, died last October after falling from the balcony of his room at the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
