The new Marvel movie Thunderbolts* has changed its name to The New Avengers after its release in cinemas, prompting speculation about what could come next in the superhero franchise.
Following almost a year of build up to the movie, which stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, at the end of Thunderbolts* it was revealed that its real name is now The New Avengers, presumably with the characters to take a significant role in the next phase of the cinematic universe.
The cast of Thunderbolts* gathered on May 5th for a video released on Marvelâs social media channels to unveil the filmâs new name on its posters, ripping the original title off to reveal The New Avengers written underneath.
Additionally, in another social media video released by the studio the same day, actor Stan was seen repapering new versions of the posters over signs and bus stops.
However, Marvel has not yet explained how much the name change of the film will affect the future of its franchise, after the character of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine renamed the Thunderbolts* to The New Avengers in the film, and the title has subsequently become permanent.
Despite this, the filmâs director Jake Schreier previously told Entertainment Weekly that the rebrand of the superhero group âwas in the script from the very first draft.â
He added: âEven though a lot of things, almost everything, changed around it, there was the core idea of these operatives sent to kill each other, which I thought was such a neat twist on people expecting Marvelâs Suicide Squad. And then that was the ending, and it went to a very different place, but that was the one thing that was like, no matter what we do, itâs going to end in that place.â
The New Avengers is out in cinemas now.
