Chris Stapleton Stuns the ACM Awards Crowd with a Song He Wrote About His Wife, Morgane

Chris Stapleton took the stage at the 2025 ACM Awards and, as usual, blew the crowd away. This time he did so with a tribute to his wife.

Tonight, the Academy of Country Music is celebrating its 60th annual awards show. No award show or celebration of country music would be complete without Chris Stapleton. He has notched several hits of his own and has penned chart-toppers for some of the biggest names in the genre. Tonight, he and his wife and musical collaborator Morgane Stapleton took the stage to perform “It Takes a Woman.”

Stapleton and company took the stage just moments after he took home the Male Artist of the Year Award. He may have been performing in front of hundreds of fans at the Ford Center and countless viewers at home, but it was clear that he was singing to Morgane.

Stapleton co-wrote the song with Ronnie Bowman and Jerry Salley for his 2023 album Higher. His performance this evening proved how true the title is. While Stapleton and the band sounded great, the performance would not have been the same without Mrs. Stapleton’s help. Every time the couple takes the stage, they prove that they have musical chemistry as well as romantic chemistry. Their harmonies are a highlight of any performance.

Chris Stapleton, Ronnie Bowman, and Jerry Salley created something special with “It Takes a Woman.” While they songwriters were doubtlessly thinking about their wives and marriages during the writing session, they created a song that was relatable to nearly anyone who has experienced a strong and supportive relationship.

In the lyrics, he admits that he’s incomplete without a woman who will bring out the best in him. Beyond the bare-bones arrangement and Stapleton’s otherworldly voice, the song is heartwarming poetry.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Stapleton revealed the reaction he received when he showed the song to his and Bowman’s wives for the first time. “They loved it immediately,” he said. Then, he spoke about how it feels to write a song like this. “Some things feel, when you’re writing them, I wouldn’t say that you know that they’re good, but you know when they’re easy to write, when they write themselves. This is one of those that kind of wrote itself,” he explained.
