Kamala Harris Makes Surprise Met Gala Debut in a Stunning Black and White Gown
The former vice president graced the steps for the first time.
The world may have not been expecting Kamala Harris' Met Gala 2025 debut, but she made it a moment worth remembering.
The former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate made a surprise appearance for fashion's biggest night in a custom black and white gown by Off-White, the luxury brand founded by the late iconic Black designer Virgil Abloh.
Though Harris was not seen on the carpet, the official social media channels for the Democratic Party shared photos of her look writing, âKamala Harris stuns at the Met Gala.â

Vogue shared more about Harris' stunning gown, designed by Off White creative director IB Kamara. The dress is made of cady silks to give âa deep, luxurious texture" with a statement sleeve and a pleated skirt. She was accompanied by her husband, Doug Emhoff, in Brunello Cucinelli.
âThe true core of dandyism is rooted in confidence and strength," Kamara told Vogue. "There is no person who exemplifies these characteristics more than Kamala D. Harris, someone who has overcome adversity and continues to be a beacon for so many. This is such an important moment for me and the whole Off-White community.â
Harris' night at the Met marks the second time she has made a meaningful public appearance in less than a week, after previously keeping a low public profile since the November election. On Thursday night, she spoke at a gala for Emerge America, an organization that helps Democratic women run for office, in one of her first public remarks since her defeat by Donald Trump.
In her speech, Harris urged Americans to fight back against the fear being pushed by the Trump administration.
âPresident Trump and his administration, and their allies, are counting on the notion that fear can be contagious. They are counting on the notion that if they make some people afraid, it will have a chilling effect on others,â she said. âBut what they have overlooked is that fear is not the only thing thatâs contagious. Courage is contagious.â She added a call to action: âLetâs lock it in.â
In a statement to Vogue, Harris extolled the value of art in impacting culture, including politics.
âArtistic expressionâwhether itâs dance, music, visual arts, or fashionâhas a way of capturing the mood and language of the people without words," she said. "Art has the power to shape the conversation about where we are today and where we need to go.â
While Kamala Harris' Met Gala appearance marks her personal debut, she is far from the only politician to attend. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez memorably attended the Met in 2021 in a white dress that read âTax the Rich,â causing some hubbub among her Republican colleagues.
Other women politicians who have attended include Hillary Clinton, former New York Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, and of course, Jackie Kennedy and her daughter Caroline Kennedy.
Now, Harris joins that esteemed list of both powerfulâand fashionableâwomen.
