Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible' Cast Members Share Surprising Details About the Actor

A lot has been said about Tom Cruise over the years, but the word âpassionateâ is one of the oft-repeated terms to describe the enthusiastic actor. Whether heâs performing his own death-defying stunts or praising films he has nothing to do with on his Instagram page, few actors have shown their dedication to the film industry the way he has. But according to his costars â some who have worked with him for decades, and others just a few years â thereâs so much more that people donât know about.
Simon Pegg, who has played field agent Benji Dunn since 2006âs Mission: Impossible III, has fond memories of joining the franchise, thanks to Cruise. âI remember that first day when I was on set and I met Tom and Ving for the first time,â he told People. âI just remember how lovely they were to me, and how welcome they made me feel.â
While on a snowboarding trip in the Alps, Pegg discovered that Cruise is just as good a friend as he is a co-worker. âHe managed to get [a nearby bakery] to make me this really beautiful birthday cake, which they then took up the mountain,â he remembered. âThat one really does take the cake, if youâll pardon the pun.â
Ving Rhames, who has played computer specialist Luther Stickell since the first film, has frequently spoken highly about Cruise. âHe really treats his actors and crew very special,â he told ComingSoon.net about Cruise. âSo, as I got to know him, heâs the only man that Iâve met in life who doesnât see color.â
For Angela Bassett, who has worked with Cruise since 2018âs Mission: Impossible- Fallout, hearing Cruise arrive at work each day is one of âthe most thrillingâ aspects of working with him. âThe whir of the helicopter,â Bassett said. âThatâs kind of different, so it put a smile on my face.â Cruise is a skilled pilot and would often fly his helicopter to work.
The actress also described Cruise as âpure enthusiasm.â He âjust wants to pull the best out of everyone, wants everyone to look great, do great and work hard,â Bassett said. âNo one works harder than he does⌠To work with someone who cares that deeply, that profoundly, that completely, is a joy.â
Hayley Atwell, who joined the franchise in 2023, agrees with Bassett, noting that Cruise has an âunadulterated sense of joy and love of cinema.â She âloved the sense of funâ and the âspontaneityâ Cruise brought to the set. âI really love [it] because it keeps me on my toes,â she said.
Mission: Impossible â The Final Reckoning debuts in theaters on May 22.
