Alex Consani Makes Her Met Gala Debut in Nearly 33,000 Crystals

Alex Consani made her debut at the 2025 Met Gala — and wore a cutout suit dress with nearly 33,000 crystals to the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" event.

Alex Consani made sure she couldn't be missed at the 2025 Met Gala.

For her debut at fashion's biggest night, the 21-year-old model stepped out in a cream cutout suit dress featuring 32,900 crystals, Swarovski told Vogue. Tightly-stacked crystals traced the dress's lapels and around the hips, and more stones cascaded down the skirt.

Consani told the outlet she had the ability to collaborate alongside Swarovski and her stylist Carlos Nazario on her dress's design.

“Having that opportunity to talk with people that you look up to in the design world is really rare. It was kind of a new thing for me, but it was great because it felt like such a collaboration,” she told Vogue. “Most of the sketches that they brought to me were exactly what I wanted.”

The look's inspiration began with Consani, said Giovanna Englebert, Global Creative Director of Swarovski — following this year's theme, "Tailored for You."

“Alex herself was the starting point of inspiration,” Englebert told Vogue. “This moment was particularly special because it is Alex’s first Met Gala, so we wanted a look that was elegant, chic, timeless, yet impactful—something she would always remember.”

In October, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for this year's Met Gala, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair. The event, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum's spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which is the theme for the gala.

Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton shared that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”

The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.

The Met Gala's dress code for this year is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. The gala also has a star-studded host committee: Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, as well as Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher.

Consani's appearance marks her first-ever Met Gala. But it follows her recent years in the fashion industry, more recently making history as the first transgender model to be named Model of the Year at the 2024 Fashion Awards, hosted by the British Fashion Council.

At the Dec. 3, event, the young model acknowledged the historic moment on stage when she accepted the award, noting that she "can't accept this award without thanking those who came before me."

Consani, who started modeling when she was 13, specifically paid tribute to "the Black trans women who really fought for the space I'm in today."

Alex Consani Says ‘It’s Crazy’ Being One of the 1st Trans Models to Walk Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: ‘More We Can Do’

Months before, she also made history as one of the first transgender models to walk at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Oct. 15.

At the time, she reflected in an interview with Teen Vogue about the “really impactful moment” of breaking that barrier alongside Valentina Sampaio.

“It’s crazy, though, because I didn’t even realize I was the first to walk until after I walked the show. I thought that Valentina had already walked a while ago, so having that in my mind took the pressure away,” she explained about Sampaio, who was the first trans model to appear in a Victoria’s Secret campaign, but not a runway, in 2019.

During the interview, she advocated for more diversity in the modeling industry, emphasizing "there’s more we can do,” noting that  “it starts with fostering a conversation.”

“It’s scary, though, because if you talk about the need for diversity to someone in power, they might X you out and say, ‘Well, if you’re upset then we’ll just make sure you’re not included,’ ” she said.

Consani acknowledged she “didn’t trust the process” at the start of her career, and “for a long time" after that. But she also revealed that she draws inspiration from trans models who eventually came before her, such as Dominique Jackson and Connie Fleming.

“Their experiences were so crazy,” Consani recalled. “Hearing how much they had to push the barriers for me to be where I am today, I could never compare my situation to theirs.”
