FIFA’s expanded, expensive and heavily criticised Club World Cup gets underway this weekend with 32 teams battling out for a top prize of £100m at the end of a season that has already left the dozen European teams exhausted.
But it is not just about those big names with sides from Africa, Asia and the Middle East keen to see how they can fare against more familiar faces across the next month in matches across 11 different cities in the United States.
And for all the gripes around travel, playing load and unsold tickets, it is hard to dispute FIFA’s attempts to make it a truly global competition with 20 different countries and six different federations represented as Chelsea and Manchester City fly the flag for the Premier League.
